Hey Guy's and Ladies?
Got me a fine custom 45cal. flinter with a purty striped wooden ramrod. How about an easy way to make a replacement, if the time comes? The brown color strip curves around the rod full lenght. Don't make it shoot any better, but sure looks nice.
Thank Kindly,
Deacon :hatsoff:

I stripe my hickory ramrods to try and copy the curly maple striping . After sanding the rod smooth , wrap the rod in a spiral leaving about 1/8" gap in the spiral between tape. Use CHEEP tan 3/4' masking tape .

Apply 2 to 3 coats of stain to the exposed wood and allow to dry completely . Pull the tape off . You will see that the stain has crept out under the cheep tape in places . This is good!! Now just stain the whole rod to desired shade to match the stock. The rod will have a somewhat barber pole look out of the gun , but once in the gun , it will blend right in .

Yes, I like them also. I used the white adhesive you find in the drug store. The tape 1/2" wide and I wrap it leaving a 1/2" space. Then I char it with the torch, sand it some with 220 and 400 grit paper and then I stained it, and applied 3 coats of linseed oil. I'll be doing this alot more often now. I really like it. ...Geo.

Try wrapping it in aluminum foil instead of tape. Torch it and there is no adhesive cooked on the rod to mess with after the job is done.
That's how the old timers did it. :rotf: Well...maybe not but it sure works great.
