For 6 years I was anal an removed the nipples and greased the threads. Until one lazy night I just cleaned the gun and did NOT remove the nipples. Now 5 of 6 come off but one is stuck! :cursing:

I tend to be the "gun guy", which is fine to share the sport, but not so good when I am stuck cleaning 2 revolvers and usually one rifle.

Anyone had this problem? I was told to soak it in Break-Free but want to know how others handled it.

Have sinced went back to the old way of cleaning THE RIGHT WAY, and now only take one BP gun! :winking:

Don't feel too bad - until I read your post I wondered if I was being too pedantic removing, cleaning and greasing the nipples each time. I'd suggest plugging the errant nipple (tooth-pick, gum, whatever) and pouring/spraying a penetrating oil as you mentioned. Leave overnight and try to free up next day.

I've recently changed all my nipples from steel to 'Ampco' beryllium ones. They're a little dearer than steel but beryllium is very hard and resistant to corrosion. Hopefully they'll last longer and won't rust in.

As you say, it's probably always best to remove them and grease them up after shooting. After reading of your problem I'll be sure to carry on doing just that. Good luck,

I did the same thing with my rem once (a quick clean, looked o.k.), but in 14 hours it siezed.

I'd suggest "KROIL" penetrating oil, that stuff will go everywhere.... If there are threads exposed this stuff will creep in and follow them.

Ad says it will penetrate a gap 1 millionth of an inch.... I believe them....

Good luck....

I recently pulled a nipple that was visually rusted in place. I sprayed it with some CLP and went in and had some dinner came back out and ruined a nipple wrench trying to get it out. In fustration I sprayed more CLP on it and went to bed. The next day I straightned out the nipple wrench and tried it again and the nipple came out like it was never stuck in the first place.

Moral of the story: Let it sit with the oil for as long as you can stand it.

Thanks to all who replied. I will try the products you mention and see how it goes. I think if I soak it and be patient it will come off. Patience is not my strong point!

THANKS!
