I can only tell you what my experience has been. The Moose Snot has been doing a good job on two of my rifles (and a bunch of iron/carbon steel knives). I do spritz some liquid WD-40 (as opposed to aerosol - which would probably also work. I buy it by the gallon can) after I have cleaned with HOT, HOT, HOT water and then tip the muzzle down to let it drain. Then, I wipe with a dry patch, a patch with Rem Oil, and that followed by a Moose Snot covered patch. One rifle went 4 months without a problem. I check all my rifles once a month with a lightly lubed patch (I'm paranoid).

Before I shoot again I run a alcohol damp patch and then a dry patch, then a lightly lubed patch.

If I'm certain it will only be a week until shooting again I skip the WD-40 and the Rem-Oil.

I would not trust moose milk as a storage coating, as it has water in the formula.

Moose spit is also out, but moose marrow would work.

Just remember I make no claims for rust prevention, just as a lube and cleaner. I would feel terrible (but not as bad as you) if you got a rusty bore after using anything on my recommendation as a rust preventative. It works for me. :results:

Thanks stumpy! I wouldn't hold you accountable. I figure your stuff couldn't be aby worse than some of the commercial stuff out there!

Murphy's Oil Soap is a wood-cleaning product you can buy just about anywhere. Check the cleaning product aisle at Wal-Mart. It should be there where the stuff like Mop-N-Glo, Pledge, etc. is.

Murphy's Oil Soap is a vegetable oil soft soap. The equivalent should be anything listed as a potassium soap of vegetable oil. It is a mild detergent with an oil base. Primarily used as a wood cleaner. I also found that when applied to metal as is it prevents rust.

Based on a quick look at the MSDS, you should be able to swap Pine-sol at a 1:1 for the Murphy's and get the same resilts (but I've never tried, so proceed with caution).

Things to avoid are petroleum distillates and artificial odors/scents. They'll gum up as tars when combusted. The Murphy's is not the primary oil (that's the castor). It is the detergent and surficant properties that come from Murphy's that help spread the oil. If you come up with an available vegetable oil cleaning product, let me know and I'll see if I can hunt up the data om it. In the US we have a MSDS database for poison and spill control, maybe I can find what you have available from that (it's a world market out there).

So where do I find my castor. Beaver trapping has been out for me this year!

CVS, Eckerd, Wal-Mart, any drug store.

4 oz. sets you back about $1.79 at Rite-Aid to $4.19 at CVS. Wal-Mart is $3.69 last I knew.

Shops that cater to 2-stroke motorcycles and R/C airplanes also would have it, sometimes.

OK, I gots the formula's for Snot and Milk (which is the greatest :imo:). So can ya print the ones for Spit, and Marrow. Thankx in advance Bill.

This is probably a stupid question. I see in your reciepe for moose milk you say non-chlorinated water, What exactly does that mean? Not tap water? (evian or something like that?) The use of water does not rust the barrell?
Thanks

In my case it's pretty simple. We're on our own well. :: Chlorine, flouride, all the other oddities I don;t have to worry about. Just worm parts and ground contamination. :shocking: Chlorine wasn't in my control samples so I can't say how they might effect the results. Anything you put in the barrel has to be burned or ejected, or else it contributes to fouling, and as a solvent the alcohol may not drive off the chlorine fast enough. Not sure if disolved chlorine is an oxidizer as it is in the Clorox form. I assume it must be or it would not be used as a purifier. Maybe that's why some folks have more rust concerns when cleaning with water?

Just being thorough.

Can jojoba oil be used instead of castor oil ??
Distilled water is better than regular - no minerals or chemicals in it..me thinks ??
I'm going to mix up some- your formula sounds like it might be great !! :winking:
Be well
Thom ( limpin' frog )

Jojoba would probably be the best yet. I understand it is close in a lot of ways to sperm whale oil. Around here it's much expensive and I've never tried it.

If you do, let us know.

Distilled water would be ducky, as would letting tap water sit out overnight in an open container for the chlorine to evaporate off (like you do with replacement fish tank water).

What about rain water?

Thanks Stumpy,

The good oil soap isn't available locally. Around here they tend to use caustic solutions.
Local worriers don't bite their nails, they just disolve them.
I went on to Google and found that Murphy's Oil Soap is used in Australia but there was no mention of sources so I e-mailed the company in the US for an Aust. distributor.

Eoin.

PS. Did you know that Murphy's Oil Soap is the most commonly used chemical to wash elephants? Marvellous the info that can be found through Google.

Stumpy,

I let my boss read the second issue of Buckskinner Magazine, and the first thing he told me when he gave it back, was that he was going to make some "Stumpys Moose Snot"...

I told him to make enough for me too!

O.J.,

I hate to tell you, but when your boss brings in the lube it usually means it's time for performance reviews.

If it works well for him tell him I said to give you a couple extra hunting days off this year.

I found out that Murphy's Oil Soap is made by Colgate-Palmolive,they answered my '?' So I contacted the company here and they knew all about Murphy's but don't distribute or manufacture in Aust.
So am now checking alternatives. Might be easier in the long term to get my own moose.(I've wanted to use that for a while!!!)

Eoin.
