That Cabelas Carbine is not a good shooter, I had one and they is a fast twist to begin with and I couldn't get any better than "pie plate" with that at 50 yrds, now matter what I shot in it.

Find an old Jukar or CVA/Trad Kentucky in 45 and cut 6" off the barrel. There's a gent I know that did that and he loans it to kids an the ladies all the time.
Many of them shoot it  surprisingly well.

being unfamiliar with the various Pedersoli MLers, I took a look around Dixie's site and found the "Super Cub" 50cal percussion on sale 28-1/2" barrel 7#

There is a shorter barreled gun at 24", but recoil would be more, and sight radius less, so a trade-off. Its a little less $ but made in Spain.

The Lyman Deerstalker is another short barreled option, but has a recoil pad, so could be shortened more easily.

thanks all I need to go to a cabellas or something to try these on for size. The deer stalker sounds like we may be able to afford it.

Button Buck, what part of central Illinois are you from? I'm in Crawford county near Robinson. In April the Fort Lamotte Rangers in Palestine Illinois will hold a 3 day gathering. Go to www.fortlamotte.com for all the info. Your wife should have an oppourtunity to shoulder different rifles there. Last year we went to the Friendship spring shoot, it was no more than a 4+ hour drive.

My Bride is small as well at 5'4" and 120. Last fall she used an old CVA .50 with 60 grains of FFF to tag her deer, I wouldn't hesitate to use the same load myself.

:v By all means go to a rondevous or Bp shoot so she can try several before you buy. What may feel light to you may be a beast to her, because of weight, balance, and fit. Rejoice that she wants to shoot! :v

The Missus shoots a Dixie Cub, in .50 Cal. She can shoot it very good. This is in Percussion using 50grs. of 3F Goex. The recoil in the Roman nose type stock doesn`t phase Her, but it kicks the Snot outta my Cheekbone!! Really is a light and accurate Rifle. It is a little hard to clean because the Barrel and Lock does not readily seperate from the Stock....

Mike Lea sells a lightweight flintlock kit that can be either a .50 smoothbore or a .45 rifle. It is copied off an original 1800 "boys" rifle. My wife has one in the .50 smoothbore. The gun weighs about 5 pounds and with 35 grains of 3F it will go through 2 or 3 phone books.

Hope you don't let her on this thread! :shocked2: :haha: .

I'll have to steal that idea for my wife--she's promised me that she'll try to shoot one of my muzzleloaders this spring!

Pedersoli makes a rifle specifically for women and youngesters It is called the Cub Dixie and is available in .36, .45 and .50 calibers. It is lighter in weight and has a LOP more appropriate for a woman of your wife's small size. I would recommend it as a possible choice. Since Cabela's carries many of Pedersoli's guns, they will likely have it in their store or available online through their catalog.

Check Dixie gun works too. I saw a Dixie Cub on sale for $450.00. Pedersoli makes a nice Scout rifle too that is light and accurate. I have one in 45 and really like it

Thank you for all the info. There is a Cabella's up north by grandpa's so we will check out the guns. I had forgot about the cherokee and seneca they can get pricy but gosh what great guns they are. Ideally the 45 cal CVA kit we are putting together will work for her but I have my doubts. Myself I have 4 long guns and maybe 5 when the cva is put together, I bought a big safe to safely store all those so there is room in our safe and hearts for more muzzleloaders.

If you do, be sure to ask what's in the back room. I don't know how universal this is in Cabelas stores, but I heard an interesting story from a clerk in the one outside Salt Lake City. He apologized that all they had in the rack were inlines. He'd been told by the management to box up all the traditional models and keep them in the back room. Weird, eh?

How about one you can out RUN !!!!!!!!

I agree the Deer Stalker might be a good starter I have one and that is the one I teach friends with.
