My fiend's son will be turning 15 next March. He likes shooting clay pigeons a lot with his 12 Gauge pump.

We don't do anything formal, just a portable thrower and a box of birds.

He likes shooting his cap & ball revolvers and has seen me shoot my rifles and shotgun. He's also shot them.

I thought about getting him a single barrel smooth bore to shoot clay pigeons and if he got the urge he could load it with round balls.

With that said, I think a 20 gauge would be appropriate. Because of his age, I want to avoid a double barrel to minimize loading mistakes.

I don't think he would be averse to a flintlock as he thought my Charlie Moore pistols was a lot of fun and his older brother has the Cabela's Blue Ridge flintlock.

What does everyone think about the Pedersoli Northwest Indian Trade musket for a teenager? Any options for a percussion smooth bore in 20 gauge?

I think you may have to go custom for a percussion 20 gauge single.I’ve never seen one. Dixie gun works has a single 12 in flint and percussion, I think that Hovey Smith guy reviewed the flint one. Or get the parts and build one for a family project!

If it were me I’d build it for a family project. I’d go to 20 guage as you typically load a bit heavier on shot to get nice pattern density with shot this keeps recoil more pleasant. Use a good barrel and a quality lock probably more importantly. BJH

Well you should know then that the caplock was born due to a bird hunter's frustration with the flint ignition vs. birds in flight, and the scent bottle ignition was invented, which eventually lead to what we call today the cap-lock. So I'm saying a flinter on flying birds with a 15 year old used to a modern shotgun...., maybe not ????

So that leaves caplock, and the question is then, how much do you want to spend?

The Pedersoli 12 gauge will work. It's obviously a flint barrel with a drum installed and the half stock of a plains rifle slapped on to make it work, but it's much less expensive than a Tradegun kit, or a finished trade gun or SxS.

Also, you don't need "Super Duper Magnum" loads to shoot trap, skeet or round balls in a ML12 gauge. It can easily be loaded down to about the same recoil as a 20 gauge.
