I am going to build my first flint lock starting as soon as the parts show up. For a first time builder, any suggestions on who and where to buy a good set, or a beginners set of wood caving chisels? And for just some basic work for now, which ones would I need?

You can get decent chisels in your local home improvement center too. They stock Stanley locally, and they've turned out to be a decent chisel for the money, especially after some honing. Far better than the cheap chinese stuff I tried from Harbor Freight.

Not sure how much money your interested in parting with but either of these places should have what your looking for

The ole' addage about "getting what you pay for" was never more true then when buying tools. :hmm:

Google, lee valley tools, or woodworkers supply for a couple of the best sources, but actually a number 49 and 50 Nicholson rasp is almost as important, but pricey, but worth it. You can also do a search here on the forum, there a number of discussions on carving tools, and almost as many on keeping them sharp. Whatever you choose, don't buy cheap, you will definately regret it.

the brownells palm set looks very good for the 35 bucks or so..the millers falls set is what i have you can find them on ebay for about twice that much.. very high quality, really cuts down on hand fatigue. the next one youll need is a longer one like the 4mm two cherries gouge.. at brownells. just a slight sweep (gouge) with strait long steel shank for getting into the bottom of the barrel chanel, and removing very small thin slivers made black (with soot from candel) on them for inletting gun parts.. this type chisel will also cut against the grain in tight spots when the going gets tough without crushing the wood next to it if kept razor sharp.. ... dave.
