Swampy whilst following YOUR directions on making a hunting bag, I dang near bleed to death or at least it seemed that way for a second or two.

See you never explaind that a stitching awl can and apparently WILL go right into a finger and beyond. So there I am stitching my nose-picker to my hunting bag wondering how this could have possibly escaped your attention and prehaps YOU had devised this little exercise on PURPOSE for YOUR own twisted amusement. :hmm:

Anyway, giving the benifit of the doubt, you might want to add that little piece of wisdom into your instruction page so that a fatality dosnt occure on YOUR watch.

:haha: :haha: :haha:

Other then that...Thanks for all the help! :hatsoff:

Hey Wattsy,

I gotta point out (or is it "forewarn you") that it only gets worse. The more you use an awl, the smoother it gets and the easier it pierces-------- both leather and flesh.

You can hasten the smoothing and really ease the job by polishing the awl with fine emery cloth. But be real careful when an awl suddenly get easier to use than it was before. Seeing the point of an awl sticking out the back side of your thumb is a religious moment.

Oh hell I've spilled blood on just about every bag I've made. :haha: It's an occupational hazard.

I for one, think it personalizes the finished product!

...sort of like "signing" your work!

I cherish that little bag you sent a time back and use it for my trail walks. The note that came with it with your john henry on it works as signature! now I gotta look for the dna sig.!

love that bag by the way. added a strap to it. see if I can get a pic.

....stitch enough leather, and 'yer gunna bleed!

Probably pee myself watching some one ELSE do it but in no hurryto do it to myself. :shake: :haha:

:haha: I ended up with 2 band aids doing a Buffalo bag a couple weeks ago, so many layers make it a @%&#. Healed up and ended up with one band aid doing the last one. I had it almost done without incident but ended up putting a needle about a 1/4" under a finger nail. Oh that hurt......

IF YOU DON'T LEAVE DNA ON A LEATHER PROJECT, YA AINT DOIN IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

Swampy, know what ya mean about the needle under the nail, man that hurts so good! :rotf:

Man, there's truth to all of that, It seems I CAIN'T stitch leather without bleeding,
It almost as though it's not done right without blood, sweat an tears!

And depending on your inclination or restraint, some real colorful cussing now and then!

I did the same thing last bag I made. Almost done and startin' to feel pretty smug about not bleedin' on it. About 10 stitches from done and I stuck a needle right in beside my thumb nail. That sucker hurt for 2 weeks!

While stitching the strap fob to the bag last week I taught my grandson thirty new words that he really enjoyed and immediately repeated to grandma. Life just ain't been the same around here since, although the boy says that he can hardly taste the soap anymore. Vern

My boy was 3, sittin one the floor playin with onna them "fit the shape" plastic balls.
He was havin a difficult time with one of them when he said "Sh!T" put the thing down and walked away.
It was in perfect context, an utterance of frustration!
 I learned my lesson.
