I am thinking of ordering some Swiss powder, but which one 1.5ff or 2ff? I have an Austin&Halleck 50 Cal.1:66 twist, its a mountain rifle, percussion. The only powder i can buy in the area is Schutzen, $21.98 a lb.but for now they are out of 2ff. Thought maybe i would just order 5 lbs. of swiss, at the price of the Schutzen i guess i am paying for hazmat shipping anyway.

I think I would get the 2F, the 1.5F seems to most popular in the big bore cartridge loads. I actually use 3F for my .36 Navies and a .40 cal flint rifle.

Yep 2f would make the most sense. Even my .75" smoothie prefers ffg over fg.

You can mix granulation sizes on an order, so why not get both and try them. I started using Swiss Ffg in my .50, .54 & .58cal rifles. It works very well, is accurate and burns quite cleanly. It does have noticeably more oomph than an equal amount of Goex and will raise the point of impact. Of course you can compensate for this, if you wish, by reducing the load size when using the Swiss.

I, too, wondered about the 1.5 Fg granulation and got some to try. Using equal measures of 1.5 Fg Swiss is more comparable to the Goex Ffg, although it still seems to be a bit hotter. I don't have a chrono to verify that. It still burns quite cleanly. If you compare the different powders, Swiss Ffg looks to be closer in grain size to Goex Fffg than it does to Goex Ffg. The Swiss 1.5 Fg appears to be closer in grain size to Goex Ffg.

The bottom line is that either would probably work well in your .50cal. If I were ordering 5 lbs, I would get 4 lbs of Ffg and 1 of 1.5 Fg to try.

:imo: I would go with the FFg for your gun.
The 1 1/2 Fg is more for cartridges where the chamber pressures will be much higher.

Although you don't have to, it is suggested that if your using Swiss Powder, you reduce the powder loads to 15-20 percent less than the Goex loads you may have been using to keep your shots hitting in the same place.
