I could use some advise. All I have ever used in my .50 TC Hawken is 85 gr. pyrodex RS (ffg) behind a PRB. I want to switch to Goex in fffg. I am aware of the 10-20% reduction in charge when going from ffg to fffg. Is this switch a worthwhile one? Thanks!

If you've shot much Pyrodex thru your gun, you know there is sometimes a slight delay before the powder ignites.
With real Black Powder this delay will almost never occure.

If you can find some Swiss powder, try it. It costs about twice as much as the GOEX but in my area, it isn't any more expensive than Pyrodex.
Swiss powder is a "Sporting" powder and it's more powerful than the GOEX. It also does not foul as much. In fact, Swiss powder fouls about the same as Pyrodex (which isn't very much).

I too am kicking the Pyrodex habit. I'm gonna order some KIK from Powder Inc. Been hearing some positives on the stuff and its about 1/2 the price of Swiss and less than Goex too.
Idaho PRB

Yea it's worthwhile. You won't need to drop much to match the Pyrodex. Maybe only 5 or 10 grains less of Goex FFF should get you in the same target box. :nono:

I've used Elephant FF, Goex FF and FFF, Schuetzen FF and FFF, and Swiss FF in my .54. I will never use Elephant again. I consider Goex and Schuetzen about equal, but I am a Swiss convert. Once I shoot through all my Goex and Schuetzen, I will stick with Swiss FFg. Maine Powder House, Upper Missouri Trading Co., and Powder Inc. sell Swiss for about 40-50% more than what Goex is commonly available for, and it is TOTALLY worth it! You can actually reduce your charge volume by about 15-20% with Swiss and get the same performance as with Goex or Schuetzen.

Maine, Upper Mo, and Track of the Wolf will sell powder only in 25 or 50 pound lots, but looks like Powder Inc., will sell 5 and 10-pound lots. You pay more per unit, but for those who only shoot a pound or so a year, it might be worth it.

Yes, it sure is. Goex 3F is the best powder on the market.

Nope! Swiss and KIK are both better than Goex. The Ffg grades of both these powders perform as well as Goex Fffg and burn much cleaner. KIK even costs less than Goex.

I'n not overly concerned with how clean they burn. I am only concerned with autheticity. That said, I'm not sure any of the powders we use are very authentic. I've been using GOEX for over 30 years. It works for me.

I don't understand how today's Goex is any more of an authentic blackpowder than any other brand of blackpowder available today, including Swiss and KIK. I'm not sure about Swiss but KIK has been in production almost as long as DuPont/Goex.

While you may not be concerned with how clean a powder burns, generally a cleaner burning powder means a more efficient powder and my experience with both Swiss and KIK confirm that they are both more efficient than Goex. Less residiue in the barrel also makes it much easier to reload in a hunting situation and makes reloading during plinking sessions much less trouble free.

Are you concerned with accuracy? I spend a lot of time and do a lot of shooting on load development. The most accurate loads I have found for all my rifles are using Swiss or KIK. I have yet to find one of my rifles that shoots more accurately with Goex than either of the other two mentioned powders.

Got my frist can of swiss 3f is that stuf realy nice, its to good for my cap locks I can make them work with any BP or pyrodex may have to clean a little more with the elephant but its a third the cost. 777 works good in my shot guns. :winking: Rocky

Except for cost Ill take swiss, KIK seems to work about the same on most my rifles, and nothing wrong with the "G", now if they would bring back Curtis and Harveys # 6 ! wed have some real powder, I guess the cost of the wood stopped that and many others, just for kicks sit back and read about the old powders, type wood used ect, I wouldnt of thought charcoal could make such a big deal in BP but it did.
