Hi I recently aquired a L.Day swivel breech rifle. After taking it out of the wood box and following the assembly instuctions given.I took the gun out to fire it.Using the barrel with the serial# as barrel one.I have consistent good ignition from it but barrel 2 is failing to fire on the first shot. The second cap though sets it off.We noticed a litle looseness at the swivel point so we took it apart and tightened it hoping this would solve the problem but it still is not consistent. Also I am sighting it in for maxi balls. Will round balls shoot at the same point of impact.

Hi,This we did but it didnt help. The rifle has been stored since it was purchased and nobody knows when that was.Is there something that could have happened from being stored.

Is the nipple damaged or shorter than barrel #1 nipple? Compare the two nipples and make sure they are identical. If they are the same and both are clean, check the alignment with the hammer on barrel 2.

Elker, Please tell us the whole story. Are you using black powder or something else. Also, that L. Day should shoot better with patched round balls. You might try some .530 balls in .015" patches. Let me recommend some pre-lubed patches. Your L. Day was probably made especially for round ball shooting unless it was ordered with a twist for elongated bullets. I asked about the powder because the blackpowder substitutes are harder to ignite. Yes, I understand that you're getting good ignition from one barrel but not the other. I will still recommend black powder. Please tell us more about your L. Day rifle. Does it have iron or brass furniture? Le Grand

Hi,I am using triple seven powder with rws caps. The rifle has browned steel parts on it and the wood is a striped possibly maple. It came with a 2 test targets with was sighned leanord day 75 yards/75grns/patched round ball.It is shooting 1 foot low with both barrels using maxi balls at 100 yrds with 120 grains of powder. The reason I am using maxis is I intend to hunt elk along with both mule and whitetail deer. The maxis are hiting staight with no sighnes of wobble or flipping.

First off swap the nipples around and see if you have the problem with the other barrel then. If so, you need a new nipple. No big deal. And real black powder ignites a lot easier than the subs. And no, Maxi balls will not shoot the same as rd balls.

O.K.,That sounds like sound advice and why didnt I think of that.I live just a few minutes away from the range so I might go back out today.I am wanting to get it ready for season this sundays opener day.I really like this rifle and hope to get this bug worked out, thanks.

Elker, You are exceeding L. Day's load recommendations by a very long way! He recommends only 70 grains in a .54 and loaded with a patched round ball. Triple 7 is a lot "hotter" than FFg. My recommendation is that you get some FFg and some round balls before you damage your rifle. That damage would probably be to the swivel parts. Another point to consider is that your barrels are not as thick, or wide, as usually found on .54s and therefore you should certainly use lighter loads. Your gun's barrels probably start at 15/16" and taper thinner toward the muzzle. That gun wasn't made for maxi balls, back-off. Le Grand
