T/C Breaking Flints

I have a T/C Renegade that I use for hunting whitetails.
well, I guess it started out as a Renegade..... as a tool & Die Maker and obsessed "tinkerer" I tend to modify everything I have.
The lock is original equipment. I have ground the frizzen face a time or two and hardened it with casenit.
I only get a couple or 5 shots and the flint breaks.
Is there anything I can do to extent my flint life?

Pictures? Frizzen open and closed at half ****. Maybe geometry at work.

Some T/C flint locks had poor flint to frizzen geometry. T/C came out with a replacement **** to correct the problem. Problem is, these new cocks are hard to find, and command a premium when available. I have been told that a Lyman Great Plains **** will fit the T/C, and it has better geometry so it won't shatter flints so often.

Grinding the frizzen face not a good idea. Those had a reputation for bad geometry. Look into getting a replacement lock, like the L&R RPL. Will take some work to install but a good lock.

Might also be frizzen rebounding back onto the flint and breaking it. A longer piece of leather that extends over the top of the flint and protects it will give you an indication if that's the problem.

Hey 7 short, today I replaced my T/C frizzen with a Lyman.
aside from thinning the sides where the screw goes through and a proper positioned flint,
it seemed to clear up that problem that I had also.

I had the same problem with my T/C hawkin replaced my frizzen with a Lyman and problem solved have not had a misfire or broken flint since.

I'm using flints that I bought from a guy in Ohio, can't remember his name, but someone on this forum gave me his name a couple of years back.

As a reply to the above three posts, yes I have the old style hammer T/C Hawken.
As in my post above i had to thin the frizzen where it drops into the lock with no mods required to the lock itself.
Sparks great with the proper positioning of the flint.

Test shot it yesterday...man its cold out....and the ignition was flawless.
will do final sighting on the bench if we get a warm day here.
Hardened the original and will keep it as a spare.
Ordered a PA. hunter frizzen from Taylor and Company will modify and use as a spare.

I use T/C and German and English and French all work good I get 30 or 40 shots per side I do a lot of target shooting so always trying new flints for longevity and good spark.Some guys bash the T/C flints but they have been a good flint for me and readily available in a pinch.

The difference is the Lyman frizzen is harder.I also have an older hammer set up on my T/C Hawkin and the Lyman frizzen as I said has worked flawless.
