I am trying to determine the value of my .40 caliber T/C Cleland Match Hawken Rifle that has been asleep in my safe for about 20 years. I don't believe it has ever been fired. I cannot find any that have sold since 2006 when one was auctioned for $1000. I have the original box and instruction manual.

For those that are not familiar with the rifle, it is a precision grade .40 caliber cap lock rifle intended for serious target shooters. The .40 caliber patched round ball has long been considered the "ultimate" projectile for competitive shooting. Combining the inherent accuracy of the .40 caliber round ball with a 31" precision rifled barrel (1 in 48" twist), Thompson/ Center produced a competition grade rifle that will shoot as well as it looks. The heavy octagon barrel is 1" across the flats, giving the competitive shooter the added weight needed for a steady hold, and the 31" barrel gives the shooter the sight radius needed for a finer sight picture. The all-steel adjustable target rear sight has large knobs so that windage an can be adjusted by hand without tools. The muzzleloader was designed by and named after National Champion Chad Cleland, a T/C Pro Staff Advisor.

I saw one of those on EBay four or five years ago. The idiot who sold it offered the lock, barrel, and the stock with all the hardware in three separate auctions. I didn't bid on it, as much as I wanted the rifle. Unless you "win" all three of those major components, you don't have a rifle... You just have parts. I think he ended up getting $700 - $800 altogether, and I don't know if the same person won all three auctions. I would have paid more than that to get the rifle as a whole. Scalpers like that outsmart themselves. If they would just sell their guns as they are on one of the gun auction sites, they would probably get more for them.

That sort of thing aggravates me.

Anyway, those rifles were legendary in their day. I think one like that ought to bring $1200 - $1600, based on its quality, condition, and scarcity.

You have quite a prize!

It can not be a complete firing gun. So separate the lock or the barrel and its good to go. I too don't like seeing the guns parted out. The few I have sold on ebay I list without the barrel. I then communicate to the buyer that the barrel is available. You usually get that question from potential buyers anyway. There are plenty of gun auction sites out there so don't think ebay needs to be faulted for their rules.
