I picked up a T/C Hawken recently, and I just got the improved hammer and frizzen to upgrade the lock. While working on it this morning I noticed a problem with the new frizzen. The tail piece is significantly thinner than the tail piece of the old frizzen.

Here are some pictures. This shows the old one on the left and the new one on the right.

This is a rear view with the old frizzen mounted. Notice it's a snug fit with no gap.

The same view with the new frizzen.

And a bottom view.

I measured the thickness of both pieces, the old one is 0.217" and the new one is 0.183".

The pan cover and the frizzen face of the new one are the same width as that of the old one, it's only the tail piece that's significantly thinner. But there's some sloppy rocking/side-to-side movement of the frizzen because of that gap, even with the mounting screw and frizzen spring in place.

Is this a common thing with these new frizzens? Do I just need to fill the gap with some washers, or did I get a bad part?

Does it have any or much slop when it is closed.

I have an old Siler that flops around open, but is fairly tight closed though.

I think as long as it doesn't lose or spill powder when it is closed, it should be ok.

I would shoot it first, to determine if there is a problem, then go from there.

If it was mine I would make a bushing , or two (one for each side ) if needed to keep the frizen properly located. :idunno:

Mind if i ask ehere you got the "new" frizzen and hammer? I just got an old kit that was never built. And would like to upgrade when possible

If it was me id use some small nylon washers/bushings

If it were me I wouldn't be happy with a part that fit that poorly. Where did you get the parts? I would contact them and discuss the issue.

+1 I picked up some small brass washers and worked them down to thickness with some wet/dry 400 grit paper and some light oil on a piece of glass. Works great. Ray

That's strange. I acquired an older T/C that had the older lock style. It had a newer (not case hardened colored) frizzen when I got it. It fits snug with no gaps near the tail piece. Is the frizzen you received a genuine T/C?

that's a new one ... never heard of that problem with T/C frizzens ... as an aside, I had a Lyman frizzen on my T/C for many years before i got the new lock- there was a little side play, but not nearly that much ...

I would contact the cust. svc. folks and see if they can resolve the problem and, in the interim, make a bushing to tighten things up.

I ran into the same problem and I just took some small washers to shim it. Works great. Good Luck, Steve

I just measured 5 new uninstalled TC frizzens and they all measure .183-.182.
I measured two old style frizzens and one measured .183 and the other .204.
Put some shims on it and forget it.
The difference between an old style and a new style lock goes more than just the cock and frizzen.
Just shim it and forget it.

I got them on fleabay from someone who deals in muzzleloader parts, mostly T/C and CVA. Top rated seller and he was very helpful with info I had asked for. I contacted him last night and he replied this morning. He said he has no problem giving me a refund or exchange. But, he also told me he measured the other new ones he has in stock and they're all 0.185". He volunteered that information without my asking, and I didn't tell him what the measurements are on mine. So I believe him.

Plus, considering these three posts in this thread...

...it's starting to sound to me like T/C has had some manufacturing variations over the years, even with the old frizzens. I think I'll just shim this one with washers and go with it, and I'll get the measurements first before I buy any in the future.

Looks like the link for the first picture in the OP is bad for some reason (that's photobucket for ya). Here's a new link to that one. I'll leave these pictures up for future reference.
