...i recently aquired a hardly used early Renegade with set triggers... when i place hammer on half-cock it covers the end of the nipple such that i must pull it back a 1/4" more in order to place a cap on the nipple.... i compared this to my other Renegade (later edition) which provides nearly 1/4" of clearance above the nipple and therefore no problem placing a cap... are all the early T/C locks like this or is this a problem which can be corrected with a few parts changed... i have a bunch of lock parts...

T/C hammer problem??

I have two TC Hawkens and the Locks on both rifles give about .100 clearance between the top of a standard nipple and the hammer at half cock.

I started with a T/C hawken I bought in the 70's that had the same nipple clearance as you've described. I think it's just the way the are, and I never thought of it as a problem. When I'm shooting or hunting with a cap gun, I always place the cap on nipple with the hammer on fullcock, and then seat the cap by by letting the hammer down (easily) before I shoot anyway, then pull back to halfcock.
I'm looking at a T/C lock now, and the only easy fix I can see is to replace the tumbler, that is, if they make one :idunno: . I personally don't see it as a problem and suggest just cycling the hammer back to halfcock when you're shooting. Soon it will be second nature. Bill

...hello Robert and Snowdragon... Thanks for the help :hatsoff: ... I'll go with your methods... I was concerned that maybe I had a serious problem... I do have an extra tumbler or two... maybe someday, if I feel adventurous, I'll change them out to see what happens...

You know, mine does that - but only after I changed out the nipple.
The stock nipple is relatively short; the Hotshot I replaced it with is longer.
You should be able to get another if it bothers you. I personally like it. That cap ain't goin' noplace! :thumbsup:

Normal. Some did this, some not. As stated the original nipple was a short neck nipple and gave more clearance.
For hunting I take a piece of med weight leather about 1 1/2" long by 1/2" wide and fold it lengthwise and punch a hole in one end. I tie a leather shoelace to the trigger guard and run it through the hole in the leather. After placing the cap on I place the leather between the hammer and the nipple. I don't trust half cock notches as a safety. you can hit the hammer with a mallet and the cap won't fire because of the cushioning of the leather. When you pull the hammer to full cock the leather drops out of the way.

All mine have had the same tight clearance also. I did get an original short nipple though and the clearance is about a 1/4 inch though. Last year when I was hunting with the thing I was so scared I was gonna drop the hammer on the nipple when releasing it from full cock. The lock had a horrible notchy feeling right before it got to half cock when you were letting it down slow. It never did slam though luckily.
TC did this. The difference is in the hammers. I have a Hawken 54 with 1" barrel that the hammer cup at half cock completely shielded the nipple. My White Mountain carbine OTOH has enough clearance to use my capper at half cock. I compared the hammers and the square hole was cut at a different angle otherwise the hammers are the same. I ordered a new hammer from Track and now I am happy.
