Again, thanks for all the great advice. I'm happy to say: problem solved. Here's what I did for anyone with similar problems who happens across this thread.

I first ruled out nipple and cap problems by trying new caps and nippel. No change.

I removed the lock, which was indeed simple. The lock was mostly clean and not at all 'gummed up'. The two screws holding down the bridle plate (I think that is the right term) were loose. This allowed the bridle plate to rise up and the small wedge shaped fly underneath to move out of place. I repositioned it, put the bridle plate back on and retightened the screws. This is the course of action recommended by several folks in this thread.

The set trigger works fine now and the hammer releases with enough force to fire caps.

Of couse this causes a new and much more serious problem... Now I don't have a good excuse for when I miss the 100 yard targets, hehe. Cheers!
