Took my new to me T/C Hawken .54 to the range for the first time. I was really looking forward to shooting this as it’s my first .54 and I wanted to hunt with it this fall. First shot the nipple shot out into the grass never to be seen again. Took some powder to the forehead, but the glasses saved my eyes. Upon closer inspection, someone had committed the cardinal sin of cross threading the nipple. I am going to try to get a 1/4x28 tap and clean up the threads. If that doesn’t work, what are my options? Is there a commonly available nipple with a larger shank that I can just drill and tap my threads to?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

the video (if it works) is me shooting my .50 percussion rifle. That one didn’t lose any pieces.

Track of the Wolf (and maybe others) sell "oversize" nipples based on the TC 1/4x28 thread.
They begin @ .005 over through .025 over size.
They can be found here, beginning on the bottom of page 2 and then on page 3. Available in hardened steel or stainless;

You will want to retap the threads. Track may have the tap. The .255 will probably work. I bought the tap off the net from a supply house. I had to drill it also. I was not able to simply run the tap. You may be able to though.

Gotta wonder what the seller knew about this 🤔.

I tried the 1/4-28 tap. Unfortunately it’s not big enough to created threads. Just ordered the oversized tap kit from track of the wolf. I’ll let you guys know how the repair goes.
I just want to shoot my rifle!

The .05 over tap and corresponding nipple seem to do the trick! The first half of the threads seem a little loose, but the second half grabs tight and holds strong! Depending on what happens with the threads on the first half, I may have to go a size bigger.
Either way, they gun will be functional now. Thanks for the suggestions!
