Found one locally on Armslist. .50, but the barrel has been d&t for a scope. Might make an interesting shooter, and the price is right. Options:

.45 or .54 T/C barrel from An Auction Site

.40 Green Mountain Drop in barrel.

All with patched round balls.

In the mood for something completely different, and Ballistol does a fine job. My New Englander is good from where I shot it several years ago. Might even trade off my Uberti 1861 Navy for the right barrel.

I don't really understand your question .. or are you just making observations?

If you are trying to replace the barrel, why? Just put small tap screws in the drilled and tapped holes and you're done.

a 54cal t/c hawken barrel will not work on a 50cal stock as the 50cal is 15/16ths and the 54cal is one inch.

My New Englander is already a .50, for one. Good to know the .54 won't drop in. Really was thinking .45 or .40 anyway.

Maybe it's not drilled and tapped for a scope, could they be spare toucholes? Not sure the original Hawken (or is it Hawkin?) rifles have them in either case...

Some later model T/C Hawken barrels come pre-drilled for scope mounts. They would not be spare touchholes under any circumstances. Just get appropriate threaded plugs for the holes and don't even consider that a new barrel is necessary for this reason. I have used a small piece of lead lightly pounded into such holes to fill and seal them. A little cold blue (from a bluing pen) will camouflage.

Of course, if you want a GM .45 barrel, those make fine accurate shooter out of the T/C. But keep that .50 barrel for variety.

Sold a .50 TC Hawkins this evening, in excellent condition for $225. Always hate to see one go, it's like losing something. :( A friend new to black powder had interest in it. Took him outside to teach him how to load and shoot it. Set up a small paper target at 35 yard, first round dead center bulls eye,,,,,,,, no kidding smack dab center. Well,,,, :v: ,,,,,,, three more to go to cull the herd.

Hey there.
I don't know who knows what so I'm just throwing this out there.
New Englander barrels fit New Englanders no matter the caliber. GM drop-ins don't fit New Englanders, no matter the width. They got different external geometries on the barrels.

That was more than fair FC. And the guy musta been grining ear to ear! Can we presume it was his first BP gun as you trained him? Don't suppose it had any backup pre-started toucholes...

Those GM 40 cal drop in barrels are real nice and a lot of fun shooting. also cheap to shoot as they use very little lead or powder.

The drilling and tapping for a scope won't hurt anything unless the holes were drilled too deep. You can put plug screws in the holes and you won't know they are there.

Ask for few days for inspection of the rifle so you can get your money back it you find a problem the seller has not listed. I like to ask the seller questions over the phone and if the answers appear ok I send him the money.

Probably real hard locally but a lot available on line (I dont have a .40 yet but been looking hard and see balls n molds at lotta sites, try TOW, Cheaper than Dirt etc.)

How hard are .40 round balls to find?
well you are going to want to use a .380-.390 roundball in a .40 caliber rifle
Try and seat a .40 ball with a patch in a .40 barrel and you are going to need to bring a mallet to the range.

A .380 mold isn't to hard to find.

He could get the GM .54 drop in. My TC .45 is pretty heavy. A 15/16th .40 might be a bit heavy on a hunt but lovely in match!

Yea, we were doing the scadian thing and digressed. I've been threatening to cull the herd for a while and had pulled five out and had them on the table. I opened my mouth as to why they were on the table and he jumped on it. Wasn't long before we had four people shooting. Two were not new to shooting, just have never fired black powder before, one was a virgin; and ended with a grin from ear to ear. We ended the evening with cleaning and maintenance,,,,,,,,, and TOTW's web address. :shake: oh the seed I've planted.

I have the same problem, I picked up a 2nd hawken last weekend. I think I'm going to have it bored out to 54. I'm saving my pennies atm.

"Atlantia" is it?

Ya know, if half those 5 seeds you planted grow it will ripple throughout time in your area for generations. You might have started hundreds of new traditional blackpowder shooters over a few generations who surely will often gravitate to Hawkens, or Hawkins. Our Johnny Appleseed!
