Yuh done good! I'm lucky enough to get to participate in a program that teaches shooting sports to highschool aged kids through our Parks & Wildlife Dept. in Texas. We go through about 100 to 150 kids a day for three days. Granted our muzzleloading station is just one of many long gun, hand gun, rim & center fire, sporting clay and archery. They get a lot but it's such a treat to watch the eyes when the first big, smokey BOOM goes off...even the girls get excited. We use a Pedersoli Frontier and a TC Greyhawk, since that's what the state had, but also add goodies to the mix from out own collections. It has to be quick and dirty due to time constraints but when you see the kid's faces, you know it's all worth it...every last hot, cold, dusty, windy, rainy minute of it! Sometimes even get a teacher to give it a try...then end up giving them my old Dixie or TOTW catalogs if they show serious interest. I just hope we're building a future for his sport we all love so much. My congratulations!

Where has the Green Mountain barrels? Checked Green Mountain and they are not listing any sort of T/C barrels...

sad to say but, unless ya find some still in stock somewhere evil-bay will probably be yer best bet for a green mtn drop-in.

How hard are .40 round balls to find?

No problem you can order them from a number of catalogs. Like track of the wolf, Mid south shooters supply & etc.

well you are going to want to use a .380-.390 roundball in a .40 caliber rifle
Try and seat a .40 ball with a patch in a .40 barrel and you are going to need to bring a mallet to the range.

A .380 mold isn't to hard to find.

For the 40 cal GM barrel, he is going to want to use .395 balls. Hornady makes them and Lee makes the mold.

So. Looks like I am minding the Bay or maybe getting one made up by Stonewall Creek. Will call round tomorrow, as several vendors list Green Mountain barrels, but that may just be their oversight.

there are a few GM barrels on the bay now, but the seller wants WAY too much for them. You might also try a barrel for the Lyman trade rifle. They can be had new for the price of what some used barrels are going for. I am fairly certain that they will fit the T/C hawken as well, and can be found at Midsouth shooters supply.

I spoke to the gentleman at Stonewall Creek a while back about just building a 40 cal. bbl for one of my T/C Hawkens. He was very familiar with the job I wanted done...quoted me a price that was higher than folks generally pay for the G.M. "drop-ins"(when they find them)...but considering the difficulty of finding a 40 cal drop-in, that might become a viable option.
As the quick and easy...(as well as very reasonably priced) options have dried up for 40's..I started thinking that instead of putting THAT much into a custom built barrel (only), which would still leave me shooting a modified T/C, it might be wiser to just wait a while and find an entire rifle that is exactly what I want..left-hand, and all.

Found a 38" .40 IBS... Good things happen to good people. The rifle will also serve as a chunk gun at the Alvin York shoot next year, so the length is a plus. Will have to wait til the first active duty check gets here to buy it. I am heading out for 65 days active duty right now...

That is one FINE stroke of luck Hillbilly..!!
Congratulations. That bbl. ought to be a fine choice for chunk gun shooting.
Be safe on your deployment...
btw: I spent a few critical years (Grad. school at U.T.) in E. Tenn. myself...Go Vols...!!

Being a cheapskate, I have always used wet pillow ticking for just plinking. Might try Ox Yoke prelubed patches with mine though.

Update: spent the $$$ on the rifle and she will be at home when I get there. Is there anywhere in the Jax area with traditional muzzleloading Stuff?
