Separate the Rifle. Then get a few $1.00 Pool Noodles from the dollar store (stock up in the summer if need be) take a razor knife and split the noodle down one side, stick the barrel in one, sandwich the stock in TWO split pool noodles (extra piece of split noodle around lock / hammer), and then the ram rod in another. Duct tape to hold noodle around parts, ONLY let duct tape touch noodle. Put all pieces in the box then pack dead space with Pnuts, bubble wrap, etc. I've shipped a many a front stuffer like this, narry a problem. The damage CAN result in the carrier, but I bet you a fat rat to a funky monkey most times it is the SELLERS LAZINESS or being cheap on packing!!
This may work for a half stock. A full stock isn’t any shorter by removing the barrel

Indeed. I was referring to a half stock rifle, since we were discussing one in this thread. We are quick to blame the carrier, but in some cases the packaging can be the cause of damage. Pack that thing like its gonna take a trip to OZ. I did send a stock and lock to a feller here and I THOUGHT I packed it for a trip to see the Wizard, but I forgot one thing, I didn't water proof it. When he received it, the package was soggy, wet and falling apart. SMH.
