T/C Tree Hawk .50 Questions

Hi everybody!

A friend of mine bought a .50 T/C Tree Hawk with what looks like a composite stock and a cammo pattern all over it. The thing is a Youth Model I think. It's got a short stock and an even shorter barrel. Anyone know anything about it? I'm looking for beginning load recommendations, and anything else that you feel I should relay to my friend. I just finished cleaning a hole lot of rust out of the thing, and then soaked it some more in Barricade. Looks like a nice Women's or small kid's rifle.

They were designed to be samll in frame to accomidate the tree stand hunter...Never shot one but understand that they shoot just fine. Range might be somewhat limited do to the shorter barrel length but still reliable to 70some yards. Id start at 70 grains of FFG and start working up a load at 25 yards.

I looked on line and it appears to be a fast-twist (1 turn in 20") conical or Maxi rifle. That 70 grain load you suggested, is that for conicals or PRB's? And how do PRB's shoot out of this fast-twist rifle?

there is replies on the white mountain carbines those are 1/28 some report getting good accuracy with prb with 50 or 60 grains. I would start at 45-50 grains with a prb and see how it goes. I hear they shoot reals and maxis good.

Connicals. I bet you could find a load to plink RB's with but I think you would be challanged hunting with RB's in that gun.

Thanks Guys! My buddy is looking for a plinking load out to 50 yards, so we'll start with the heavy pistol load (40-45 grains) and see where it shoots and if it stays on paper.

I've owned 1:28 twist rifles that would shoot amazing groups with a patched round ball over 80 grains of Pyrodex.

Well, I haven't tried pbr's in my 22" or 28" 50LRH GM barrels...didn't think to try!
But reckon now I will.

I just bought one a couple of hours ago at a gunshow for $85.00. It's getting ready to come a thunderstorm so I wont get to shoot it today. I bet it's going to be really fun to shoot such a short rifle.

If I like it as much as I think I will, I may wind up ordering a stock blank and turning it into a fullstock. :thumbsup:

That would be a full-stock, sorta half-stock Carbine Right? :haha: The extra weight probably won't hurt it none.

I don't like the feel of synthetic stocks at all and think it would be a cool project.

Getting around to it is another story.

I just got back from shooting it and all I can say is to tell your friend to expect big fun from such a small package. :thumbsup: I had a blast shooting it. I'm used to set triggers and it doesn't have them, so I'll have to get used to the trigger on it but other than that everything went well.

Back in the early 90's I had a freind that had one of those Tree Hawks. My memory says that he shot TC maxi Hunters in it, but don'stremeber the powder load, maybe 90 to 100 grs. of Pyrodex RS. He loved because it was short and suited him in the tree stands.
