Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with Thompson Centers Westerner rifle. Accuracy, performance, load capacity, rate of twist? To me it looks like a Renegade with a round barrel. Thanks

The T/C Westerner ML is a Black Mountain Magnum, in .54 caliber. It has a 1 in 28" twist, according to T/C catalog #26. T/C catalog #27 says it has a 1 in 38" twist . Either way it is not a roundball shooter. Fiber optic sights, aluminum ramrod, will accept 3 Pyrodex Pellets. Claims it has magnum capabilities. Comes with musket cap nipple, and # 11 nipple. Walnut, or Rynite stock. It has a 26" round barrel. Looks like a T/C New Englander that has been worked over.

Thanks for the info. I have a T/C Renegade 50 cal 1/48 and was thinking about going to a faster twist to shoot sabots. The Westerner seems like it might be a good sabot gun. Also thinking about just putting a 54 cal barrel on my Renegade since the 54 round ball is only 20 grains less in weight than the sabots I have, which might simplify things. Also have been reading in past posts good reviews of Buffalo Ball-ets in 1/48 barrels. In any event though it should be fun finding out which I like best.

Thompsons lighter Maxiballs work well in 1:48 also, as do some others. The Ball-et works well in some guns and not so well in others, so it's a matter of trying them to see how well they shoot in yours. The round ball is a top performer in hunting though. Amazingly so compared to it's paper numbers.
