T/C White Mountain Carbine

I just picked up a White Mountain carbine yesterday for 150.00 at a local shop. looks pretty decent other than a couple small rust spots around the nipple area and a few handling marks on the stock.I got a couple questions regarding this ML.(1). what is the twist rate on this 21" barrel. (2) and what bullet and powder combination gives the most success or accuracy.

My WMC is an older one in .54 with a 1:20 twist. I think I bought it the first year they came out. I believe T/C changed the twist on later models. Stritly a conical gun, I've had best results with a 425gr Buffalo or Hornady hb,hp using 85-90 grs of Goex fffG. Grouping is good at 80 yds., which is about my limit with such a short barreled carbine. It's a thumper for sure, but that big hunk of lead drops a deer fast.

The ones with the QLA are 38" twist. I forget what the others are.

Also did the WMC use the same rear sight as the Renegade?

QLA means Quick Load Accurizer. Sort of a False muzzle setup where there is no rifling at the muzzle end of the barrel so that conicals can be started easier and centered.
I believe the rear sights are the same.

A friend of mine has a WMC 50. He loaded it with 80 gr of 777 and got over 1500 fps with a 410 gr hornady great plains rifle. After the 4th shot his stock broke at the lock. Talk about a hard kicking gun. Ron

I had one a few years ago that I picked up at a gun show. My first ML as a matter of fact. It was a fast twist and wouldnt shoot a round ball worth a darn.

Oh yeah...it had a crack in the stock at the same place.

This is a real nice rifle. It's great for hunting out of portable climbing treestands. Great gun if travelling by boat,canoe,atv,jeep, or bushwacking on foot. Shoot the conicals.... ninety grains of R/S Pyrodex and a Maxi-ball is good. The recoil from a fifty is hardly noticeable. You'll love this gun. :wink:
