A guy brought in his 54 Burnside that he got at a pawnshop for $200. Needs a new hammer spring and he wants to know if I could make him 5 more rounds. I found the brass at Buffalo Arms and I'll lathe turn the bullets because they seem to be a bastard size. Pretty cool rifle.

It's my understanding that this was the in-between to modern day breech loaders, hence the weird brass cartridge that it uses.

Looks like a 4th Model Burnside. Check with the N-SSA guys, they shoot them all the time. Bullets are available.

Sharps main spring will fit that lock. When I had one the sheet metal brass would split on firing at the bulge after a few reloadings. Dixie at that time offered a mold for a correct bullet.

He just wants a few extra as a display piece to go with the rifle, so he says. But he does want it in working condition anyhow. I'll just make the spring for the hammer as well.

I just cast a bunch of bullets for my Burnside. I need to size them but I haven’t yet got a sizer. I’d be happy to drop some in the mail for you if you only need five or six. I also have some brass to sell. PM me if you’re interested.

You'll always wonder who put the "E" mark there, and what does the other rune indicate? I gotta move to a more rural area, there are no "real" pawn shops where I live!!

I shoot mine on a regular basis. The brass cases I got with it are a pain to use. I bought the white nylon ones. A . 457 round ball gives me as good a group at 50 yards as my old eyes can aim those rather small battle sights.
I’ve reloaded the cases around 6 times now and lost only two that split.

I think the fire hole had a foil seal? I have to look, I have one of these ctgs. but am not up on them; have to read up!

Just that there's an old "E" scratched into the stock, and a rune of some sort; maybe from many years ago. I have an Rem. Rolling Block 7mm that has couple initials scratched into the stock, it would be cool to know who/why/when someone did that.
