I feel like puking my guts out. I finally got some time to pull this Belgium .54cal smooth bore out of the closet to strip down for her over haul and i can not find the tang screw any where! :barf:

Any clue on what to do?

I also need some ideas on how to fill in some minor gaps rears the butt plate. I was thinking woodglue and saw dust mixed in?

That's too bad about the tang screw; I know how you must feel. Many times metric screws are very close to US threads. Maybe you could try a couple of different sizes. If that doesn't work, I would try a metric tap and die set, see if you can find a fit and then modify a tang screw from TOW, Dixie, etc. Wood glue and sawdust works sometimes (if you have a match for the wood), also Accraglass colored to your wood if the gap isn't too big.

Re: the tang bolt, if you don't know what size it is, remove the trigger plate and run down to your local hardware purveyor and figure out what thread the hole is. You can order a new bolt from TOTW or MBS and finish it accordingly.

Or, you can retap the hole for a larger size bolt of standard thread.

On the tang bolt man do I know that one. lost mine on my CVA build .I did end up taping it to asa size from metric and used a TOW tang bolt for it. On the but plate if it is a little bit off my self I would try to inlet it the best I could first. Or may be even persuade it to fit better before I would go to the glue and wood dust. I say this again from my last build and first try with glue and dust. When I stained it well the glue mix did stain a bit deferent. If it is say less then a 1/16 I would fill if more then that I would look at other possibilities also. I also found that wood dust from rasping worked better then sanding could be just a bit bigger and less fine but it stained better then the sanding dust areas Good luck and ya know when you stop looking or when you’re done that tang screw will show up never fails

I should have mentioned that it is better if you just have to oil/finish the stock without staining. As mentioned above, most times the stain will not match the wood if using the glue/sawdust mix.

Kentuckywindage:

1. Bolt, measure, TOTW for the next size up, drill out the trigger assembly where the bolt goes through, re-tap. Done it - even re-chamfered the tang entry to get a nice screw slot line up.

2. If the gap is small, take a soft hammer (brass or nylon head) and "excersize" it to fit. If you don't mind filing it to shape, use a regular hammer.

Hope this helps. I may try the wood glue/saw dust once i buy the stain. I am using Birchwood casey walnut stain. Its water based. Stock is beech.
