Can puting a piece of tape over the end of the barrel create an obstruction? I have done it in the past with my smokeless rifle to keep the barrel clear.

I've done it before and it does not cause a barrel obstruction as long as it isn't inside the bore.

No..No.. thats not what I meant.
Why cover the barrel with tape (I'm not storming a beach)
Tape doesn't seem to have a practical appplication for obstruction prevention.
(maybe gorilla tape, but who wants that stuck to there barrel.)

I tape the barrel to keep snow and water out. Also, manure falling off trees. Thanks all.

Its never been a problem for me. tape tends not to stick well in wet or cold weather.
In rain and falling snow I carry my gun muzzle down with the lock tucked under my arm or coat.
Rain and snow usually give me a good excuse to go find a dry warm place with tall cool beverages :rotf:

There was a 12-ga shotgun that my brother-in-law was carrying, hunting rabbits. He stumbled and ran the muzzle into snow. Just as he got back on his feet, he had a shot at a rabbit - the shot peeled back the muzzle end of the barrel like a banana.

He wound up cutting off the end of the barrel and installing a poly-choke.

It won't cause a problem. It will blow off when you fire the gun as if it was never there. If you encounter any problems getting the tape to stick, you can always go to the nearest drug store and buy a few rubber finger cots. Put them on the end of your barrel like putting on a condom. They stay there, keep out the things you want keep out and will cause absolutely no problems.

Its hard to say if tape would have been effective in that situation. I have stumbled myself and obstructed the bore (once so hard with a modern shotgun that I had to make a ramrod in the field to remove it). However I am very disciplined and muzzle conscious when hunting.

I don't like things that offer a false sense of security...that's usualy how accidents happen.

Your right,
Neither tape or a latex finger is going to stop a major jam from plugging the muzzle.
But if it starts to rain a bit, or your in heavy mist/dripping tree's n brush, it can help.
Or going through dry leaves an brush,, it can stop twig pieces an leaf debris.

I have used electricians tape for that very purpose for many years and it does keep , bark, water, snow, mud dawbers and anything else trying to get inside, out. I usually put one over the muzzle and a couple of wraps around the muzzle to replace it when I have to shoot.
To get an idea of how well it will resist anything getting inside try to push your ram rod through it.
It will take and "end on" mud or snow dive if you fully cover the muzzle and get a good adhesion clear across the muzzle and down the barrel a bit on each side. Mike D.

You have to wonder how mankind survived this long without tape. :shake:

How did they get along before gun barrels....or how did they get along before arrows....or sticks or rocks. How far back do you want to go? :idunno:

I don't know much about anthropology I just know electricians tape over the muzzle works and is good preventative maintenance. Mike D.

I've been cutting the fingers off of latex gloves for years and slipping them over the muzzle whilst securing with an elastic band. A similar tactic can be employed over the lock using a sandwich bag and elastics but must be removed before firing. It will save a hunt if heavy rain develops. Honest!

If so, there'd be burst or bulged barrels from one end of Alaska to the other.

In fact, quite the opposite is true in rough country. Keeps out mud, snow, twigs, gravel, all sorts of stuff that can get in there when roughing it.
