I am looking for a single shot target pistol and I am looking for suggestions. I have a Pedersoli Carlton underhammer but I am having firing issues with it. I've tried everything but it rarely fires this first shot. The first try seems to set the cap, the second fires. Using #11 magnums, I have worked on the nipple, adjusted the nipple angle to no avail. I get great accuracy from this inline hammer and am looking at something similar.
For a traditional hammer lock I am looking at the Mortimer Standard...anyone have any experience with those?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like the cap does not fit the nipple.

I don't know what brand percussion cap you are using, but they vary in size from brand to brand.

You could try another brand of caps, try an after market nipple or turn the outside diameter of your nipple down slightly untill the cap fits properly.

Put the nipple in a drill and spin it while holding sand paper against it to reduce the diameter.

SC45-70

I'm using CCI's and I already sanded down the OD of the nipple. I'm thinking that the hammer is binding a little and not striking the nipple directly. I oil the hammer and glide area regularly. Turning the angle of strike does not seem to help.

Have you tried loosening the nipple 1/2 turn and try a cap I had the same problem with my pistol and had to add a thin piece metal as a spacer.

No I haven't, but I will! Less travel of the hammer....that might work! The cats are going to love me tonight.

Since you are in the San Antonio area, you might try to find an Ingrham underhammer or a Ten Ring

I discovered on my rifle that if I place the cap on the nipple, and then let the hammer down on it (GENTLY) then press the hammer down with my thumb, the cap will fully seat. By doing this I have eliminated 99% of missfires due to caps not setting off the main charge.

Well, still had problems last weekend. Won the match but it is still frustrating. A Pedersoli dealer told me the Carlton takes a longer nipple, Anonymous essentially suggested this, so I'll try those but if you have ever tried to cap a Carlton in winter with cold hands in the limited space provided, a longer nipple may be a bit frustrating.
I am looking for a Ingrham and also a Grey Haven arms underhammer. I do like the Carlton. I'm consistently in the high 80's now and feel I could do better if I felt confident about when it is going to fire.
Richard...have you ever heard or seen one of the Grey Haven underhammers at any of your matches?
Grey Haven

I should have said high 80's at 25 yds....not there yet at 50 yds.

I was looking at that one also and your right, Traditions doesn't import anymore. Nice looking gun.

No and to be honest it's out of my price range.

Wade Ingrham died in September, if you are looking for a pistol, send me a PM and maybe I can help on where to go to find one. I am not going to part with any of mine.

If I was looking for a target pistol I would look for an Ingrham, 10 Ring, Yazel or Lewis.

I have seen hammer strikes that hit the edge of the capped nipple a glancing blow and this can cause your condition. The counter bore bottom of the hammer nose should be on the same plane as the nipple top and not hit it on an angle and it should be relatively centered in the counter bore so the side flange does not make contact with the nipple at any point. There are two ways to fix this if the condition exists. Re-profile the hammer counter bore to center it up on the nipple or anneal and bend the hammer serpentine to line it up. If you anneal you will have to re-harden and draw the temper.
If the nipple is the problem then you can turn them on a lathe or even a hand drill motor and take down the cone angle a bit so the cap will seat fully down.Check both and adjust accordingly.
A very fine target pistol in either flint or percussion are the Yazel guns made by Harold and I think his son. MD

Cytorg - have you resolved your issues with the Carleton yet? Having similar challenges here with mine. Have replaced the nipple (6 x0.75 mm) with a revolver nipple filed down so it is ten thou longer than the factory nipple. This has improved ignition dramatically. Drop me a line - would love to chat with another Carleton owner.

I wonder if they would or could make a special order if we got a 5 gun order up? It is a sleek looking handgun! Geo. T.

If you want a top flight race gun muzzle loader I would recommend a Yazel. They are a lot of gun for the money and will shoot better than anyone can hold.
I've had issues with both of mine but every one else I know with one has had no trouble and they shoot match winning scores from the box.
I would recommend a TC Patriot as well but they are getting hard to find and will set you back almost as much as a Yazel.MD

FWIW - I have a Greyhaven gun (#3). It has never failed to fire. I do not shoot the matches that you do. I use it for our member matches here and it has served me well.
