I use a 12x12 I made from a heavy weight painter's tarp from Home Depot. I love the interior room, but, dang, it's bulky! I'm thinking of making another, maybe 8x8 of lighter weight canvas that I can pack easier when it's just me and maybe one other person. I've always used a plow point setup with two crossed poles for the front support and short verticle pole inside.

I've got a 9.5x9.5 that's a veritable palace inside, and I've packed it alover up here, but it too is a bit too bulky for me. I think yout 8x8 will be the perfect compromise actually. for my 9x9 I like to use a ridge pole held up by one upright, very quick and easy setup. I'm looking to try something different with my 7x7.

These are three of the shelters set-up at Pirates in Paradise...

The one on the left (mine) is a hand sewn sail, set-up as a lean-to.

Jins is set-up as a wedge, He uses a board that is proped up with an oar for the ridge pole, the board bends, so that is why it has that interesting ridge line...

And the last one on the right is just a chunk of canvas set-up as a lean-to

Mine is the only one with groummets (it's a sail after all.....) all the other ones are just chunks of canvas....Kinda shows some of the variations possible

 Tent stakes are whatever you want to use, drive them deep and no one will see enough to tell if they are :bull: PC or not , as long as they are not red orange or yellow.

What is PC for stakes?

I use sapplings. they're about as pc as you can get. Also, if you break one or lose one, then you're not out anything.
I guess Really old Bob has a point, but why put all that effort into a correct shelter only to skimp on something as simple as stakes! :youcrazy:
I'd hate to look down at the corners of a fine wedge tent, only to see the tops of some cheesy plastic tent stakes! :shake:

Hey Runner, I've been experimenting with tarps for a while now and have decided that I prefer these two setups:
this is a rectangular painter's tarp:

And this is a 9x9 tentesmith's trail tarp:

Both designs are illustrated in this really neat website I found: Click here

Skagan........Looks like you have my shooting bag and brown bess leaning against your tarp pole!

I think some nice hand forged iron tent stakes would be just the ticket. I know of several Smiths that would d be happy to supply them for you for the modest sum or about 15.00 each?

I had a blacksmith friend make some for me. Gave me a special deal because we belonged to the same reenactment unit. Still, I think he normally sold them for $4 each. Made mine so they could be used with a stake puller without worrying about abrading the canvas loops. I've seen the "normal" hand-forged stakes for about $2-$3 each.

Sorry! I did not know that this old thread had come to life again.

I used a cheap import painters tarp. I washed it several times in hot water to shrink it all it would. The cloth looks proper, but the weave is pretty loose. I then sprayed it with a gallon of Canvas waterproofing. Total cost, about 40 bucks for a 9x12 tarp. I used wooden balls and leather thongs to put corner ties on it so it could be set as a diamond with a ridge pole or over a sapling. It weighs in at 6 pounds and rolls up pretty good for carry. It is not as good as modern canvas in the rain, but it looks good. Most would be better served to hunt up a canvas merchant and have a 10x10 without grommets made up for them. Here, that would cost me 100$, but the difference in quality is big. I still need to add several more ties and a support patch to the one corner of mine
At Old Mines last spring, two young gentlemen walked in and set up a center pole lean to made out of a tarp that had been treated with linseed oil. It looked great and apparently worked pretty well also. It was below zero that night! They framed their opening with poles on the sides leaning out from the center pole. It would be a difficult daily setup, but for an extended camp, it was nice.
