What is everybody's thoughts on a tc 50 cal New Englander. How do they shoot, what's your experience with one? Thanks for the feedback. Ben

I have one. It shoots well enough. It seems to stay in the safe when ever I drag out my smoke poles though.
Thinking about having it turned into a smooth bore as it has some mild pitting around the muzzel. Maybe then it might see more use.

I think them to be a pretty serviceable rifle/shotgun. They are "bare bones" in that they don't have DST, patchbox, etc, but the butt is easier on the shoulder than that evil crescent on so many Hawkens. 1-48" twist, .50 and .54cal, 12ga shotgun...some late models had synthetic stocks vs walnut.

The SS/synthetic version was the Grey Hawk with 24" barrel vs the 26" rifle barrels on the New Englander. The Tree Hawk was camo, 22" with a quick twist barrel. Barrels are mix/match.

I like mine...I can't recall missing a deer with that rifle, I do recall getting two with it over the years I've had it, and hunted with it quite a bit, but don't remember a bad shot with it. Plus it's fun to switch to the 12 bore and hunt with that as well. I think they are well made simple rifle/shotgun muzzleloader.

I have two New Englanders. One is a 50 cal and the other is 12 gauge. My 50 was my first ever front stuffer. I have zero complaints about the New Englanders. It has done everything I have asked it to. I load 80gr and 490 ball and .18 patch and she gets the job done. I have since added many other front stuffers so she does not leave the safe as much as she used to, but I have no problems grabbing the New Englander and heading to the field.

I have one in 54 cal. I own fancier guns, but the plain Jane New Englander gets lots more field time than it "deserves" in the eyes of folks that care about looks. It may be simple, but it's sure accurate and comfortable to carry. I'll pounce on a 12 gauge barrel when the op arises, but I'm not pushing for it.

I have taken two bucks with my .50 cal New Englander. The 26 inch barrel has more of a carbine feel than the Hawken style. It has a single trigger and has blacked out furniture. Deep blue on the barrel. I love mine.

I had a t/c Hawken and I sold it. I love my New Englander. My son has a .54 cal. He loves it too.

Right now my only big game rifle is this New Englander. Very comfy, easy to use, very accurate with PRB.

Thanks

Great little rifle. I had a time getting mine to shoot but eventually worked out the kinks. This is 50 yards offhand.

Nice and handy in the woods.

The shotgun barrel makes it all the more versitile and fun. Here's a pair of them.

Mine is a backup gun to my .54 flinter, and is also my "loaner", if when hunting as part of a party, somebody has a technical-problem-beyond-their-control with their BP rifle, they aren't FUBAR'd into missing the hunt. Shoots very well, and I would not part with it.

Thanks so much for the info guys, what loads do you use in your new Englander rifles? How hard would it be to find a shotgun barrel for one? Thanks Ben

smokepole32,it is not hard to find a barrel, but be prepared to spend some bucks.12ga. barrels bring $200-400 for the barrel alone.I have seen a few of the shotgun New Englanders go over $500.

Professor, there is one on Gun Broker right now that meets your needs, a 54 and a 12 gauge barrel for $499

I don't need one that bad.

I picked up a NOS 12ga Toledo barrel that drops in my TC Hawken or Investam/Lyman rifles. Chrome bore and full choke

Turkeys are not happy about it!

Bought a barely used .50 New Englander last summer for $150. It has the 24" barrel.

The gun shoots really well but i had a problem with the sights. My old eyes could hardly see the front bead. Soft soldered on a set Williams fire sights from another gun and that problem is cured.

Killed a couple wild hogs with the gun: Used 100 grains of 3F Goex Pinnacle and the 320 grain Maxi Ball. Both hogs bang flopped.

The gun does not balance well because of the Tupperware stock and i'm looking for a wood stock.

Bought mine over twenty-five year's ago and up to seventy-five yard's, it's the most accurat ML rifle in the house !!! Wait a min., it's the only ML that I shoot !!! Don't need no other... Age and health got to me some time ago and now I buy my meat in the store so all I do is punch paper !!! I use REAL slug's and they make a perfect circle in the target at 75yd's... Never use more than 50gr's of 3F for what I need.. Got it fully Checker'ed and had an old man carved on the stock ... Tang Sight and a V-cut apiture on the front... Sorry for the long post, but you asked if I like it.... Ya think ???

They work well with TC's 7197(?) tang sight and a fiber optic front. I prefer green.

BTW, the fiber optic are great hunting sights, but suck when shooting at paper. I prefer a 1/16" gold bead for paper.
