I just located a 54 Cal. TC with set trigger. My friend said it looked good. Asking price was $200.00/ MY QUESTION IS "IS THIS A GOOD PRICE FOR A 54 TC. WHAT SIZE BALL WOULD IT TAKE.

Assuming the rifles is in overall good condition, IMO that's definitely a good price.
My TC .54cal loads are as follows:

TARGETS/PLINKING
50-60grns Goex 3F
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking
Hornady .530

DEER HUNTING
90grns Goex 3F
Oxyoke Wonderwad
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking
Hornady .530

NOT SURE YET! HAVE NOT SEEN. WHICH WOULD BE THE BETTER ONE. I WILL GO TAKE A LOOK. WHAT DO I NEED TO LOOK FOR?

Don't know about your part of the woods, but around Fort Worth, Texas I have seen T/C Hawkens going in the Pawn Shops for from $125 to $250 (I paid $100.00 out the door for mine). Renegades for about $125.00. These are talked down prices.

It will say what model it is on the top of the barrel.

Let us know, what it is, when you find out.

Go to T/C's website and look at the Hawken and Renegade so you will know what they look like and you can ask your friend and he should be able to tell you if it is either of them and which one.

Robert

The Hawken has a lot of brass and a brass patch box. The Renegade has not brass and an octagon barrel, the New Englander has no brass and a round barrel. It should say on the barrel what model it is.

IT HAS AN octagon barrel, no markings on barrel except for 54 cal t/c. Appears never to have been shot.

Is the stock wood or plastic? Does it have a nosecap if it is wood? Double set triggers or single trigger? Got any idea how long the barrel is? Does it look like any of these? http://www.tcarms.com/TC_HTML/TC_Muzzle01.htm

Here are the newer ones from TC 's website .. does it look like either one of these? Notice one of the noticeable differences in the buttplate .. the Hawken has a curved one, and the Renegade a shotgun style rounded one. The older ones will look a little different.

Davy

I would say a renegade. 15/16 " Octagon barrell 27 inches, overall 42 inches. Metal butplate and straight. Caplock, flintlocks are rare in Al. Double set triggers, no nosecap, wooden ramrod.

PS: all Renegade barrels are one inch...might just need to take a more precise measurement as 15/16" and 1" are not very far apart

OK, I put my glasses on, 1". I know this is not a recent production. Any estimates on date of production. I checked out tc web sight, briefly.
Reasonable price or not?

Reasonable price yes. Good price no. I see Renegades on the auction sights a lot for under $200. One advantage with the one you are looking at though is just that, you can look at it before buying it to see what kind of shape it is in.

You might want to run a patch down the barrel on a jag and feel for rough spots. Some of them "never-shot" rifles had a few caps popped and were never cleaned. :hmm:

If the barrel, lock & trigger are clean functionable - the stock without cracks or deep carvations, it's a good buy. Buying one at an auction house for $150 is alot more risk-taking than seeing it live. Plus, you still must pay for shipping.... that's another additional cost.

Just picked up 54. Cleaned and lubed, Looks clean shiny in bore. Minor dings on stock. Looks good overall. Ran into problems finding cleaning jags. Will have to order one. Planning to shoot rb. have them already. What would make good patch lube if I cut my own patches from pillow ticking. I think tc is step up from cva 50. Waiting to shoot.

Hoppes #9 Plus Black Powder Solvent & Patch Lubricant, is excellent. You can get it, and a cleaning jag from Midsouth Shooters Supply. 1-800-272-3000
