SOLD TC Hawken 50cal Kit rifle

I have a TC Hawken rifle that was a kit form. It’s put together well. The top of the barrel has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The holes are plugged with screws. The hammer was bent to allow clearance of a scope bell, but can be straightened with some heat. The rifle shoots really well with a .490” patched round ball and 80gr 3f Goex and is pretty decent with connicals. I haven’t spent any time trying to develop accuracy with a connical with this rifle, so I won’t make any claims, but I do think it will be a good connical shooter out to 100yds. I shot one group at 50 and one group at 100 using a maxi-ball.
There are the typical signs of use on the wood and metal. There is one larger “rub” under the for-end and is shown in pictures. The bore is nice and shiny, but discolored near the muzzle. I wouldn’t say it has pitting, but looks to be more like wear through the bluing in the bore. Has a really nice piece of Walnut. Shoots really well based on the one trip to the range. It’s not perfect, but will make somebody a really nice hunting rifle. I’m only selling to put the funds towards a larger caliber rifle/barrel. Pm with questions.

There is a lightly stamped K in front of the number. Is that the same?

The 'K' comes first unless it's a lefty kit. Then an 'L' will come first with the 'K' at the end.

It’s a right hand model with a K preceding the number. Also has a K in the barrel channel of the stock

Hi Elk Stalker, I am interested in this rifle if still available. A few questions: 48" twist ? The ramrod seems to be missing the jag ferrule and I like to swipe between shots, esp. when using conicals. Is that an easy fix ? Not a big deal, but can you advise on straightening the hammer? Or, for my purposes, would you leave it alone ? Pretty new to the forum. Would you like me to pm so we can discuss/exchange info ? I don't need perfection, I need a hunter so this might work for me. @Steve Wagner , welcome to the forum! This thread popped up in my "new posts" listing and I always take a look at used Hawkens, they're just pretty, reliable, and great starter rifles for new enthusiasts . Thought I'd chime in on the scraps of info I know on them but I am not an expert.

A 1:48 twist was pretty standard on the T/C Hawken factory barrel, I can't recall if there was another option. Someone in the forum probably knows better than I.

That ramrod looks like maybe delrin (sturdy nylon plastic) or fiberglass. Track of the Wolf has after market replacements in delrin and wood that match what would've come from the factory and are threaded for jag and other accessories.

As @ElkStalker noted, the hammer was bent so it is out of the way of a scope. You'll note there are 4 plugged holes atop the barrel; these are for a scope mount. I don't know how heating the hammer to straighten it would affect the metal (stress fractures, metal fatigue, lose its temper maybe). I have a Hawken with a scope mount and bent hammer and before I installed the scope I actually found the bend more comfortable for my reach with a gloved hand. Should you chose to add one later you'll appreciate that bent hammer when cocking to fire or removing the barrel to clean.

That price is great especially considering shipping these days. I got my first Hawken 12 years ago at that price. Track recently sold 2 for just under double. Grab it and run!

Thank you black eagle ! That is all very helpful, and as I looked at the hammer bend, I wondered, for my purposes, [same as yours] if it would not be best just to leave it alone. I can't use a scope here in MT and I wish those hole were not there. But that is only cosmetic and as I said, I want something to hunt with. As soon as Elk Stalker responds I will see if we can move forward. I have been reading about Hawkens for a long time and, except for a few complaints about the look not being quite 'authentic', for functionality, the TC Hawkens get few complaints and seem hard to beat. As I mentioned on my introduction post, my only experience w a Hawken was the real 'beater' hand me down I helped my son in law get going. It works perfectly. If interested, check that post for a description of it. Stainless, half round w wood, Hawken stock. Eventually, as promised, I will post pics. Definitely a weird one, but I would take stainless if I could find one in TC. Thanks for the welcome and a really useful post. SW

I apologize for my delayed response, it’s been a busy few days. I will get the gun out and remove the plugs tomorrow and report back with screw hole depths. I shot this quite a bit during a day at the range. I have never noticed any “hang ups” when running a patch past the screw holes, nor did I notice any powder burn coming through. The holes may be deep enough that it’s not a candidate for a rebore to a larger caliber, but it will certainly handle 80gr of 3f Goex behind a 385gr conical, as tested.
I’ll report back with my findings.

Hi Elk, personally I never use the included ramrod for cleaning. A lot of us don't. Too likely to get stuck or broken. I always use a range rod for that. The original ramrod I only use to load in the field... Just my 2 cents...
