Hello Gents

I recently bought a used TC Hawken in mint condition. The only problem with it is the rear set trigger is completely loose. I've taken everything apart but can't determine how the set trigger works? The front works perfectly with about an 8~ 10 lb pull which is way too much. I could stone it down to a couple lbs but would rather figure out how to adjust/reset or repair the rear set trigger.
Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

This is my first post after lurking a couple weeks. This site motivated me to get back into BP after 30 years of being away from them. Thanks!

Does your trigger look like it has all of the parts in this picture

Go to Thompson Centers website and download the manual for Sidelock Muzzleloaders.

If you find that the previous owner has taken parts off the trigger to make the set trigger inoperable, call TC. They will stand behind their lifetime warranty even though you are not the original owner of the rifle.

Make sure the allen bolt on the above picture is tensioning up the leaf spring..Ray

When you say "I've taken everything apart" hoperfully you mean you've removed the parts from the stock and the trigger assembly is still together?

If so, the very first thing to look at is that little screw that is located between the two triggers.

Try backing it out about 4 or 5 turns and then try pulling the rear trigger back.

If it is fairly hard to pull against the spring pressure that is good. After pulling it back you should hear the click of the front triggers catch catching on the rear trigger. If it is working properly it will hold the rear trigger in this spring loaded "set" condition.
Then, the slightest pull of the front trigger will release the rear trigger.

Keep your fingers clear of the upper areas of the trigger assembly when you do this because that rear "set" trigger will snap upwards with great force.

If the rear trigger doesn't have any real spring pressure resisting you when you try to pull it back, something is wrong with the big spring at the rear of the triggers. It should be pushing down real hard on that rear triggers blade behind the pivot pin.

Let us know what you find. :)
