I want to buy a smoothbore .62 cal for a TC Hawken. There is only one small problem. I can't find a source for new barrels. I called Green Mountain and they said they don't make smooth bore barrels for the Hawken anymore. Does anybody know of another source?

I have a New Englander and I am willing to just purchase a 12 ga. shotgun barrel for it. But I would prefer a smoothbore for the Hawken, "no choke" etc. I want a barrel that can do it all, deer, small game, turkey, etc. so I can't go any smaller than 28 ga. equal due to local turkey season regs.

Thank you,

Jerem

Jerem,
Might want to put a WTB add in the MLF classifieds.
Also check with some of the M/L suppliers.
Track of the Wolf, Mid-south etc. They mayhave some
of the discontinued GM barrels in stock.Just a
thought.

Hi Jerem,

The 12-gauge barrel for your New Englander will "do it all" and might be a bit easier to find. Also, you'll have more punch with both shot and roundball.

Another alternative to consider that would be in the same price range is a .56 smoothbore Renegade. Those show up regularly on the auction sites for less than $200.

I use 80 grains of 3f under a .550 roundball and get perfectly acceptable hunting accuracy out to 75 yards or so and could probably do better if I tried. The gun also does well with shot on small game. Might be a little on the light side for turkey, but as long as you're picky about your shots you would probably be okay.

Call Tip Curtis Frontier Shop, as he did have some. (615)654-4445. Also Cain's Outdoors had some at one time. Give them a call & you may luck up.

Call Track of the Wolf, they make a .62 smoothbore barrel, half round/half octagon, which will "fit" but it is just a barrel. They can provide the breechplug, underlug, rib, thimbles and sights. You can fit up and brown it yourself for about the cost of a drop-in, or they can do the gunsmithing for you but I have no idea what they would charge for the work. The big advantage to the Track's barrel is that the tapered round forward half greatly reduces the weight and improves the balance so that you can have a 36" or even a 42" barrel and still be no more burdened than a 32" straight octagon. I have a Jack Gardner 28 gauge by 30" barrel on a T/C Penn hunter which weighs a nicely balanced 6 1/4 pounds and looks like it belongs there.

flint for sure with the Hawken. If I go with the New Englander barrel I will have to settle for cap lock though. I didn't know that TC made a smooth bore in the Renegade, I may have to start looking for one. All these suggestions are great and really open my options up.

Thank you,

Jerem

No, T/C doesn't make a Flint smoothbore but GM did...

Hi again,

There is one listed on Gun Broker right now, although the price seems a little high.

Oddly, the stock shown in the picture looks more like a New Englander with an octagon barrel sitting in it - caveat emptor...

The smoothbore Renegades show up fairly often if you want a percussion gun. If you want to go flintlock, it might cost you a little more. Sure would be fun though.
