Hello everyone after a long absence from the forum I am glad to see it is going well. I have handed off 50 cal cva hawken to my son and now must work up a load for my NE 12 ga (no cash for another barrel option). I have in stock .490 round balls or some .69 round balls either will have to be patched heavy. My NE is a old one without the chokes and use my supply of fiber wads from TC for shot. So after reading lots of posts, my question is would better seal be achieved with a load made up of first wad over the powder and then a patched round ball of whatever size I can find under .715 then just a patched ball alone straight on top of powder?

thanks sgtski

A .690 is the right size ball for a .12 ga. I would try it with a wad and then the patched .690 ball over about 90 gr of 2f powder. That laod worked good in my .12 ga.

You know the bore? My bore is .735 and found it likes a 1/2" lubed fiber wad on top of 80 grains of FF Swiss and a .715 ball in a .015 lubed patch.

I never did try a fiber wad under the .690s and .028 lubed patch I tryed but without the wad I could not shoot tight groups.

I had one of the early cylinder bore T/C NE 12ga guns I may be mistaken but didn't the manual say "not recommended for ball" -Spud
