TC New Englander

I was wondering if there were, if any, other TC rifled barrels that would fit the New Englader stock? In would like to find a 1 in 66 barrel for prb. Thanks all.

I've never heard of a source for drop-ins, but that doesn't mean anything. The parts should be available if you wanted to have one made, and there's always the potential for rebores. I've got a New Englander in 54 that I never get around to using, and I'm giving serious thought to having it rebored to a smoothie. I think the stock design would lend itself to becoming a shotgun, and since the barrel is already round.....

I've heard there's not enough extra meat at the front sight for a rebore. And, at the same time, I know it's been done.
Worse case, for right hand models you can probably find a used fifty barrel to have rebored.

Thanks Goodcheer. I had the same concerns and was actually thinking about cropping the barrel just behind the sight, then soldering on a fowler sight. I need to get out the micrometer and see just how much meat is out there waiting, but frankly I haven't even pulled it out of the safe since the impulse surfaced.

Whether or not there's any historic precedent, I'm thinking along the lines of a poor man's meat gun, a shotgun to knock around and put meat on the table with no pretenses. Kind of like the single shot shotguns I grew up around in the hands of real basic folks in small towns.

Not aware of any drop-ins..Talked with Ed Rayl ... he shy's away from rebores for 2 reasons the front sight depth and the fact its hard not to mar the round barrel on breach removal for a re-bore. I have a 50 cal. New Englander barrel 1.120 at breach plug--.920 at muzzle...very deep front sight dove tail cut..Have a 50 cal. Black Mountain Mag barrel 1.120 at breach .918 at muzzle very deep front sight screw hole. these barrels are accurate with there intended projectile.

I use mine as a smooth-bore .hunting-clays..converted to flint--with the 12 ga. barrel you will get smooth-bore accuracy at least to 50 yards with a round ball. If I had only one gun to use this would be it! Not PC Not HC just a working mule!

That's what I'm looking for. I hadn't considered simply tracking down one of the occasional used 12 gauge drop-ins, but the hunt is on.

One of those lightly used 12 ga barrels are rare. I've been looking. The 1-48 twist on the original barrel shoots RB's really well with about 70 gr. ffg. I have a couple of bore out candidates, a 50 and a 54, rusted out thanks to Gunbroker purchases that read "Like New". Who would the man be to bore the 54 out to 56 SB? I think that would make a dandy little shotgun. If someone wants the 50 I'll send it to you to play with. It's just a door stop around here. These are great shooting guns. I have a couple with the synthetic stock that I sure don't worry about rough conditions. Throw it on the 4 wheeler and go for it.

Mine is a 54, so that makes two. I don't know about others.

BB... Don't be afraid of the new choked 12 ga. barrels..I found a 12 dollar cylinder choke tube and shot rb's through it with ease. No problems loading the patch rb past it.... Go for it.....Dan

That's good to know. Thanks. I've got a buddy who is a fine machinist, so if I feel I need "cylinder" I can get that done, too. Good to know they're still available from TC, too.

A while back I traded into a .50 caliber New Englander.
I did not care for the very heavy 50 caliber barrel, and intended from the start to get a 12 gauge barrel for it.
But then I found out the cost of a barrel was three hundred dollars or more, and that was out of the question for my budget.
Years ago Turner Kirkland would include in his Dixie Gun Works catalog all kinds of useful and obscure information, one bit that I recalled was the chamber of a breech loading 12 gauge shotgun was just the right size for a 7/8 inch tap.
So I sent off to T.O.T.W. for a breech plug and went to work on an Winchester Model 37a barrel
from my stash of rare and unique items that my Wife
calls "all that old junk".
I also had ordered the under barrel wedge holder
for a New Englander and fitted it and the plug to the Winchester barrel, it took a little file work
and I used the hack saw to cut the muzzle to the
length that pleased me, that also removed the full choke that I did not want.
I also had to modify the sweep of the hammer to properly position it to hit the nipple.
The project turned out real nice,with the shotgun barrel the New Englander is a very light little gun. I only have the cost of the parts from T.O.T.W. less than sixty dollars in it.
