greetings scott,

just came up on this post.

since those people were so nice to you. mention to them that the seneca bbl screws off easily. put the bbl in a padded vice and use a padded cresant wrench on the breach plug, it will come rite off.

tc at one time made a tool for taking off the breach plug, but, too many people screwed up the bbl's by over tightening aND stretching the threads.

allways remember, when installing a bbl, never go past the witness marks..

on the newer hawkins, the bbls aND BREACH PLUGS ARE NONE REMOVABLE. (darn caps lock) :). allmost runied a good 50 cougar cause i didn't know they made the bbls fixed.

I don't understand...can you elaborate on what this statement meanas

hi-ho roundball,

at one time tc sold a tool to remove th breach plug from the bbls. the tool came in three sizes to fit the vsrious size plugs.

when ever i got a new tc, the first time that was done to the rifle was to unscrew the breach plug and cleanout and put some neversieze on the threads.

got a new 45 cougar, poped the plugs, lubed them, no problem. then got a 50 cougar, (loved that custom shop) :) tried to take out the plugs and those rascals would not come out. being an old time gunsmith, i knew, if it won't unscrew, get a bigger wrench. well to make a long story short, got carried away with the bigger wrench therory. and by the time i realized what was going om, the bbl had vise marks and the cleanout had a drill mark..

seems inbetween the 45 and 50 cougars, tc decided to 'fix' the plugs so they can't be removed.

called to ask about it, was told too many rifles came back with stretched theads cause the bbl's were over tightened on the breach plug. asked what serial number the change was made, was told he didn't know.

so my friend, what the fixed bbl statement means, the plugs are no longer removable.

I worry about the different things said by different people at TC depending on who you get on the other end of the phone...you apparently really had one that was on good and tight, but breech plugs are indeed removable.

I paid TC to convert two .45cal caplock round ball barrels for me to Flint...both were made new in the mid-90's (after the two Cougar runs) and then I later had TC convert them to Flint.

They simply unscrewed the cap plugs, screwed on the flint plugs, reblued the barrels and sent them back, along with the used caplock plugs.

Here is one they removed:

greetings round ball,

forgot to add, was told by them,'they' can remove the plugs. but the tools tc sold to remove the bbls no longer work.

asked if they used loctite? if heat would break the hold? but, got no info. wish i could have gotten somone more acomadating.

left mine the way it was. maybe one day i'll put some heat on it and see what happens.. :hmm:

Yes, from TC...here's a pic of a pretty Cougar caplock stock that I dropped a converted .45cal flint caplock RB barrel & lock into...bought the stainless flint lock asm that TC uses on it's Firestorm.

hey rb, does gm make a .58 drop in for the renegade? i was on pecatonica's site and they didn't offer the .58, only the .54. the conversion to flint is appealing. chopper

Yes, they make a 1" x 33" x 1:70 capolock dropin for the Hawken/Renegade.
I paid them to put a Flint plug on one and bought it as a Flint version...fantastic barrel...this is it on a Hawken / on a 10 pointer:
