I have researched as much as I could on this and there is still some confusion. Obviously parts for these rifles have dried up but what is the actually different from the TC lock to say the L&R lock. Can the **** and frizzen from L&R be used with the TC locks?

I have read that the old style TC lock has some geometry issues. Main thing I was curious about is if L&R lock parts could be fitted to correct this if an issue arose. Just by looking at pictures it looks like some heat, some tweaking, and retempering/hardening would fix the original TC lock. What am I missing?

Thanks for any insight!

@dylan84, the first of the differences between the T/C lock and the L&R lock is the internal design. The T/C uses a coil main spring while the L&R uses a flat spring that takes up a bit more room. I do not know if the frizzen and hammer are interchangeable. I do know that the Lyman (InvestArms) hammer and frizzen have been used as replacements for the T/C components.

Ok great thanks!

You might check with the Gun Works out in Oregon. Some of the guys here have said they bought lock parts from Smith and Wesson when they sold out the TC stuff. As far as the L&R RPL lock goes I cant speak to the TC but I put one in a Lyman GPR and it works great. I know there over 200.00 now but for me Im not sorry I upgraded to that lock.

Try the Gun Works as BigAl52 said. - The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium -
I suggest that you call them if you can't find what you want on their website. My experience on several occasions was great. Also, I might add that I have a TC flintlock on one gun and the L&R RPL on another. I had to have the L&R tuned by Brad Emig. The TC works fine. Just make sure you have the new style **** on it. Attached picture shows the difference. The one on the left is the new design.

Those dimensions show that the L&R very well might be made to fit if they no longer have the TC **** in stock. Thanks for the picture!

I got the rifle in and reforged the ****! Works pretty good now. Need to order some new flints and I might be in business for awhile without buying anything else.
