TC Renegade

Just bought a TC Renegade 54 CAL today at a gun show. A really well kept gun. No rust or pitting to be found. Only thing I had to do was adjust the trigger pull. The set trigger was to light to be safe.
Which groups better? RB or Conicals. Know it is a 1/48 twist. Just wondering what other shooters have found out shooting their Renegades.

 

Round balls forever. Never have shot conicals, but RB's shoot a one hole group with my Renegade. .535 ball, .015 pre lubed patch and 55 grains of 2F.

In my experience with the Renegade and others, I generally find a load that gives me better accuracy with the RBs out to about 75 yards, but at 100 and beyond it's conicals all the way for best accuracy.

in my experience r/b's with 70gr powder and maxi's with 90gr shoot to about the same point of aim at 75yds with about equal accuracy. both will group as good or better than i can shoot. for what it's worth and have a good'en friend, bubba.

I sorta knew that :wink: I used that load in my old Renegade in matches for about 3 years, shot fine! Had to kick it up to about 80-85 for longer ranges though.

Don't get hooked on the 1/48 ROT thing does this or that better or worse. You just never know until you shoot it. Myself, I am a RB shooter.

My daughter has a TC Renegade .54 and the age of 12 was hitting clay targets at 75yrds with round balls. Really impressed some of guys at the range shooting modern firearms, although they were a little testy :cursing: on that still humid day and were not able to see their targets after a few volleys. :grin:

Ditto-except for using 80g of FF(wano or goex) and .015 pillow ticking with spit my 54 TC 1-48 shoots very well at 50yds(1-2")and keeps the 8" gong a' ringin' offhand at 100 yards.

You will have to try both to see what the rifle likes. For conicals use a felt wad over powder and try the Hornady great plains bullet with a heavy charge. Kicks a bit, but is very good on deer.

My most accurate load with my 54 Renegade (for targets) is 45 gr 777 3F .530 ball with .18 ticking patch lubed with Ballastol milk. Goes right where I aim it every time. 2.5 inches high at 50 yards puts them in the center at 100 on a calm day. I bought a 1/70" Green Mountain round ball barrel for club matches, but the 1/48 M barrel shoots as well or better.

I only have a 50 cal Renegade. It likes 80 grains of 777 and the 385 and 410 grain Great Plains bullets.

It's favorite is the Precision Rifle 410 grain Kieth nose, no longer in production, bullet. Many 50 cloverleafs with this combination. This was with a peep sight.

I am interested in seeing how it will shoot both RB and Conical. Will be happy with both or just one.
Wondering if I should use 2f powder in the charges or can I still us 3f powder? Wondering about the barrel pressure with stouter loads. Looking for the best results with safety in mind.

The Renegade is stout up the giggie as far as barrel goes. When I was young and foolish I used to shoot 110 gr of FFg with Maxi-Hunters. As I recall that was the maximum T/C load from their handbook. In case attacked by a Water Buffalo, I suppose. I did hit a bedded whitetail buck at 120 yards (over a log rest) with that load (& iron sights) and it never moved except the head was down after the smoke cleared. Still my farthest shot at a deer with anything and likely to remain so.

But it would and will clover-leaf .530" round balls at 50 yards with 90 gr FFg - so that is what she eats. It's still plenty of punch on a 200# animal. I'd have no hesitation to use FFFg - that's whet I use in my .54 flintlock for main & prime.

Thank you Stumpkiller. Your answer help belay any hesitation in using 3f BP in my loads. Don't think that I will load up to your water buffalo load but thinking it might be in the range of 90 to 100 gr.
Didn't even want to entertain the thought of ruing a good barrel.
