I had a little time to play the other day so I tried several oils I had around as patch lubes to see if there was a real difference as to hardeness of fouling, effort to load, and size of groups. I was some what surprised to find no significant difference between the oils tested. They all seemed to perform the same. The oils and mixtures I used were: Sperm whale oil( both the real stuff, and the synthetic that Dixie sells), olive oil, crisco, lard, castor bean oil (perscription grade ), and my usual mixture of 80% lard 20 % bees wax.Since my mixture was less messy than the oils I will stick with it. The test conditions were: 80 degrees F, geox FFF,Swabing with spit patch between shots, And fifteen thousands cotton patches.Swabbing with three alcohol patches and drying with two dry pathes between each test run.

Ill continue to use T/C 1000+ products, until I cant get them any more.

Then Ill dig into my black powder box, and at the bottom is a baggie with Stumpy's Moose products, and make my own.

Its tried and true

Found a small dead sperm whale floating offshore the other day. Never even thought of getting any oil. Damn.

I squirrel hunted with a Guy that used Crisco in his .32 caliber .. he was deadly with that thing.

I've wanted to try it just because he liked it .. how did it perform ?

I like the kind where I don't need to swab until every 5th or even 10th shot.

Did you use 20% beeswax with all the oils? Unfair to say yours was less messy if it was the only one "bound" in a wax. Beeswax makes a dandy lube when liquid (as in once combustion liquifies it) as it has the same tendencies as a "polar" oil in that it sticks well to metal.

TOTW mink oil for hunting. Spit for everything else.

Keep It Simple... :grin:

By swabbing between shots I'm not surprised you noticed no difference in just one shot. Had you fired five or ten befor swabbing the differences, if any, would have been more apparent.

I fogot to mention that I took five shots with each of the oils. The acohol swabbing was between each run, not each shot.Between each shot was just a spit patch swab as I do in actual shooting which is what I wanted to test for.

I wasn't trying to "be fair" I was just curous if there was something that might be a little bit better than what I have been using. My purpose of the post wasn't to put down anything or any one. I just thought with all of the posts about which patch lube oils some would be interested in my results.

I've used Crisco and Crisco+beeswax in the past along with spit patch. They worked well enough. Now days I use mostly Hoppes #9 Plus or DGW Black Solve. I've found them both superior. The Hoppes is fine for about any type shooting and allows many shots without a lot of fouling buildup. Loading remains easy even after 2 -3 dozen shots. Black Solve is great also but being water based shouldn't be left in the bore (same as with spit patch) for too long as it can dry out or even cause a rust ring.

My question is;

What are the size of your groups?

I have found a HUGE differances in lubrication properties!
And, I have done a bit more than one day of experimenting with 5-10 shot's each with different lubes.
It has been my practice in the past too experiment with any given lube at least 50-100 shot's with the simple variable as powder charge, not to mention patch thickness, too attemp accuracy with each.
