I had a little time to play the other day so I tried several oils I had around as patch lubes to see if there was a real difference as to hardeness of fouling, effort to load, and size of groups. I was some what surprised to find no significant difference between the oils tested. They all seemed to perform the same. The oils and mixtures I used were: Sperm whale oil( both the real stuff, and the synthetic that Dixie sells), olive oil, crisco, lard, castor bean oil (perscription grade ), and my usual mixture of 80% lard 20 % bees wax.Since my mixture was less messy than the oils I will stick with it. The test conditions were: 80 degrees F, geox FFF,Swabing with spit patch between shots, And fifteen thousands cotton patches.Swabbing with three alcohol patches and drying with two dry pathes between each test run.
