Thanks to all for the suggestions on my flintlock

Traderlee here, with the new flintlock I was asking about a a couple of weeks ago. I switched powder, using real blackpowder,(Elephant Brand)instead of pyrodex and wow, what a difference. Fired the first click, and I wore out my only piece of flint. Now all I need to know is where to get some more and the right size? And carry extras. Again, thank you all for all the help and suggestions.

If you liked Elephant, wait till you go with Goex. You'll like it that much better. Goex is much more consistent, and produces a lot less fouling.

IMHO, Don't buy anymore Elephant, I can't believe you even found any.......... Yes, better than Pyrocrap but I guess I would rate it as the lower grade of the 4 real black powders I would buy. Find some Goex or Scheutzen would be the best. The Elephant is usually accurate, but it is the dirtiest powder I have ever used with horrendous fowling........

With Goex or Scheutzen you will be in Wonderland..... :grin:

And if it is a smallbore, Swiss 3F is the cats meow...... But personally I only use it in smallbores .40 cal & under........

I agree with the reviews on Elephant. GOEX, Shuetzen, KIK or Swiss are much better powders.

As for flints TOW, Log Cabin Shop, and Cains carry Black English flints. Horst & McCann carry French Amber flints. Rich Pierce, a member of this site, sells White Missouri flints. He doesn't have a web site but you can find his email address on the this site.

How does the Null-B work in dispensors being so fine of a powder and how much less do you use compared to 4-F?

Sure do, just like percussion shooter's carry extra caps the flintlock enthusiast should have spare flints on hand.

I usually have 4 or 5 ready to go at all times.

Null-B seems to be the same size as Goex 7f
Have not measured it so I don't know if there is 3 grains in the pan or not but the charger works the same

Ditto!!! i've got me one of those flint wallets and carry 6 or 8 extra flints plus it has a pocket for small flinting tools and such... :thumbsup: And "yes" the Goex is the way to go... :hatsoff:

Hi Lee, glad to hear you are having success with your flintlock now. If Elephant is all you can get locally, by all means just shoot it up. Then, maybe get together with a couple of friends and order a case lot of Goex or Schuetzen (Wano) powder; it will be delivered to your door and for much less than you can get it at a retail store, assuming there are any in your area that stock black powder.

Yes, Elephant leaves a lot to be desired however it still is real black powder and it will fire successfully in a flintlock.

Actually, to my way of thinking, it is weaker than the other brands of powder and it leaves a LOT more fouling. Except for these two negatives though it is a lot better than any of the synthetic powders in a flintlock.

Because of its bad fouling qualities I prefer Pyrodex to Elephant in my cap locks though.
