Thanksgiving Shoot

Jim Goodman had this shoot the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This is the same place as Flint's Frolick 2012. There were 15 shooters, from Grand Junction, CO to Salt Lake City and in between, 20 targets. They were steel silhouettes out in the Junipers, turkey, rabbit, pig, buffalo, crescent moon, plus small round paper targets, and five across a canyon. Good targets, 100 possible points. George Jackson took first with 80 points (he was twice the Utah State Flintlock champion, I think) and I took second with 70 points, using Carole's 50th Anniversary Flintlock I built for her and Carl's 50th wedding anniversary. Here is the Cliff Shoot. Both Lynn and Terry shoot left-handed flintlocks. Joe Gondek closest to camera.

Here is Carl trying Carole's 50 flintlock she loaned me (my two are too heavy for me to shoot off-hand any more). He hit that target across the canyon, too. 80 grains of Goex 2F. He says if he gets a deer permit, he'll ask Carole if he can shoot her rifle.

Lynn, Carole with the .50 she loaned me, and Sonja holding Carole's .40 flintlock, which I also built for her. It was a really good shoot.

Double, here are a few more. There are five targets across the canyon against the cliff, amongst the brush. See them? Neither can I. When I shot, the sun was lower and my big broad-brimmed hat kept the sun out of my eyes.

Terry shooting. She is a good shot, too. I had to shade my camera against the low sun.

Lynn shooting her little .40. She also is a very good shot.

Joe Gondek shot a caplock for the first time at these matches. This is a .54 Hawken built by Neill Fields. (Joe is also a builder and worked at the Green River Rifle Works). This rifle is copied from an original, Joe sent me photos of it. The patchbox is copied after the Mariano Modena Hawken.

Note that this is a solid patent breech, the barrel does not unhook. Joe said Hawken made some that way. (I just completed a .54 fullstock Hawken for a guy who ordered the parts from Don Stith, including a solid breech like this). Also note the single trigger, like the original Hawken. I don't know who engraved the lock, Joe or Neill.

These photos are just plain wonderful.

Looks like it was a gorgeous day, weather-wise, in a gorgeous place, shooting-wise.

The people involved look like nice folks, and the guns they shot look top-notch.

Have to add my thanks for sharing those photos Herb. You all seem to have such a wonderful time at these shoots. And seeing as how we have had more than four inches of rain int he past couple of days, I am greatly envious of your sunshine amid the junipers.
