Since I'm in and out of the hospital and just got the Jan/Feb one is anyone trying to build this 6 bore out of pipe ect? Fred :hatsoff:

Is that the one that's a pipe bomb on a wooden stock? I hope that no one is trying it out.
To steal a quote from the Cannon forum - "First basic rule of cannoneering, a pipe is not a cannon." Nor is it the basis for a smoothbore. (at least not the kind of pipe that character was using).

Pete

while that piece of pipe he is using may be holding fine for him, the next one may not. theres not enuf meat there in sch80 seamless, nor is it the correct makeup of steel for burst pressure use.

that said, i have been working on a BP gun with a 1" bore for a little while. but its roughly twice the thickness of the tube in that article, and a very different kind of steel.

be very careful if you decide to build it. it probably wont blow up, but thats not a real good way to go about gun building from my experience

Some one should send Toby Bridges a copy of the plans...

on a different gun forum, this subject came up, i told them that this is basicly what was just said. i suppose in a desperat situation this might be of some use, when the world comes to an end for ex. but like i said there save some money on the medical bills and get a manufactured barrel.

Ok I was thinking no one is that nuts, and I did push loads ect, but that do seem a little nuts, may be a good thing he's useing those non pure lead balls might double the weight! :shocked2: big suckers they are. Fred :hatsoff:

he stated his balls  weighed 2 1/2oz. thats 1093gr. a 1" lead ball weights 1502. his pressures probably arent very high, even with the fast 2F he's using at 200gr charges. its probably alot safer than it seems, but theres always the chance of imperfections in the tubing, an extra heavy ball, or a tight patch on a hot day..... he says the recoil isnt bad abd his gun only weighs 13 1/2 lbs. that tells me he is shooting a pretty soft load. a real 4 bore (which is actually about the same size or a tad smaller) would have been loaded with at least 350gr of 1F or cannon. my little bit of load research for the cartridge 4bore guns turned up a max load of 450gr of 1F with a 1450gr ball. so this guy is shooting the equivalent of a 30-40gr charge of 2F behind about 5/8oz of shot in a .62 smoothie... pretty weak.

i do kinda like his super crude stock and lock. with a heavier barrel, that gun would probably be alot of fun to toy with.

Just as I was going to write this off as nuts I remembered the shotguns and handguns Ive seen over sea's Philliphines (spling ??) just pipe shooting 12g and 9 mm. But what really got me was I gtot the kid to pull a few of Sam F's books 8up with the pic's of copper pipe and PRB loads..those pipes are only .05 to .06! Test show you never say never, pipe rated for shear stress 22 to 29 psi?? was tested with 150 grs 3f Goex and it shot no damag to barrel. even one was short started 9" and nothing but lay the pipe down so the powder isnt packed and it blew. All kinds of strange, still I wouldnt want to have to shoot that 6 or 5,4 bore? :shake: Fred :hatsoff:
