I'm looking for the best prices on Lead Round Balls for the sizes: .490 & .530. I don't cast my own round balls as of yet.`If you could help me locate a good source, that would be great. Thank you for your time!!

I don't have the answer to your question regarding "best prices". But I do have a suggestion.

Until you do start casting, buy them locally, at whatever the market brings in your area. Don't order them in the mail......the postage will eat your lunch, and what you thought may be good deal, will turn South on ya in a heart beat.

I cast a lot of different bullets.... I probably have close to 40 different type mould's for different calibers. But I quit casting roundball a few years back, I still have the moulds to do so, but for $5.00 to $8.00 per hundred for .50 and .54 caliber, I no longer see the wisdom of doing this.

If you buy a box, take the time to weigh them out. Seperate the good weights, from the not so good weights...and set the "not so good" aside. And don't get disgusted with the variance...it's going to ne there, no matter what.

The "not so good" can be remelted, and used to make decent conicals when you get to them, if you ever decide to shoot conicals. Some folks love conicals for lot's of applications.

You will be doing the same thing once you start casting, so get to used to it now. Even if they are cast into roundball, you will find yourself remelting and recasting to get less variance in the weight.

Good luck with your endeavor. Casting adds another whole dimension to your shooting expereince.

Respectfully, Russ

I don't cast either and went to my locally owned giun shop that I've traded at for years and asked him if he'd do a favor for me...asked if the next time he had some big periodic order being delivered by truck, could he include 1000 Hornady .440's, 1000 .490's, and 1000 .530's...freight would be practically nothing...he wouldn't have to carry them in inventory, wouldn't have to put thenm on shelf space, etc...got 30 boxes delivered for an average price of $7/box. ($6/.440's, $7/.490's, $8/.530's)...so you might try something like that

Black Jack Hills is a good place to buy them if you want a reasonable price for small amounts of roundball. His shipping is usually included in the price of the roundballs. Black Jack also makes minnies, maxiball, and a number of other fun projectiles to try in your rifle. He makes them from pure lead, and Bill and Judy are a real pleasure to do business with.....

I understand what it is like when you do not cast and have no place close to purchase them. I do cast my own projectiles but I have a couple boxes of Bill's around for when I get lazy.... ::

Thanks to Russ for all your comments, also for Roundball,
and for Cayugad. Thank you for taking the time, to enlighting me about buying and making my own round balls.

I thought Russ was going to say this, but he didn't, so I will...if you can afford to buy locally, do it...if we freeze out the locals who carry BP supplies, we only have our selves to blame when there is no one to carry GOEX or other stuff....Hank

Hank...You are so right! We should never forget the little man in this sport.
I think that has happened, to a much smaller extent, with Goex Powder. That, and Government regs.

My heart goes out to the small dealer, he has a tough time.
And, although I've never done what roundball recommended, I think the "Mom & Pop" operation would love that opportunity, as it gives them just a "little" more purchaisng power with that order.

Good post Hank. :redthumb:

I have special ordered from my local small shop dealer. He sells me them at wholesale instead of what he adds for regular mark-up. Why? Becasue it would fall in the category of "the law of reciprocity" We don't quibble over unimportant things in the shop and I refer LOTS of customers his way. So I guess that we take care of each other in that respect.

Sometimes though, I may need something from a place that he doesn't normally deal with or his costs are much much higher. I then order it directly myself and make sure that he knows that I wasn't trying to take business away from him. It's also MUCH better than trying to deal with the bumble-heads (mostly) at the Wal-Mart sports dept.

I have also gotten some good "in store specials" at Dicks, Dunhams, Gander Mt., Cabelas, and a few speciality muzzleloaders shops. If you're already at a gun show and they have the item there, remember the shipping is "already paid for". So factor that in when you are considering the price.

You may want to check Graf & Sons, I believe that the shipping is basically included and the prices on the Hornady swaged round balls aren't too shabby at all. There is a minimum order of $20 I think and a very minor shipping and handling "fee".

It never hurts to have a good supply of round ball on hand either. Prices tend to rise, not fall... if you can afford to buy a large quantity then do so, or split a bigger order with friends.

FWIW, they may have reconfigured their products and prices...arranged according to their website, round balls do not include free shipping.

I have bought from there in the past (it's been a while), and I was very satisfied with the quality of the balls. I never did get free shipping though.

They do have a FLAT RATE policy on shipping though

Here is the information straight from their website. I highlighted it in green.

Shipping Rate Information

Some of our customers would like us to ship our bullets by USPS using their new Flat Rate Box. For those of you that are not familiar with the Flat Rate, you only pay $7.70 per package. This is much cheaper than UPS but not quite as reliable. Starting Friday July 15th we will be be offering both UPS Ground and USPS Flat Rate.

There are a few restrictions with the Flat Rate Box. You can only use this for bullets, not ammunition. Do to the size of the box we can only put a maxium of 1500 bullets in a box. If you order ammunition and chose the Flat Rate Box we will have to refigure your shipping costs for UPS Ground Rates before we process your order. US Postal regulations prohibit the shipping of ammunition through their system.

-----------------------------------------------------

I just checked on the Nat'l Bullet Co. website, and found that the current price is $21 per 500 for .490 diameter and $25 per 500 for .530 diameter. Adding the $7.70 would make that $53.70 for 500 of each size delivered. That's NOT BAD at all! Otherwise it would cost Might have to start buying from them again when the money is flowing a little better.

Don't know how you got better pricing--unless you're a dealer? OR maybe it's because your order was so large and it qualified for a better price and discounted shipping? There is a mention of better pricing for over 200 pound orders.
