Fyi, I tried "googling" Mr. Stolder without success. = PM me his "contact info", please.

yours, satx

Sad to admit, my typos are getting more frequent these days. :(
Stolder would be hard to find.
It is Stolzer. http://www.stolzergunsmithing.com/

Something is wrong with forum today. I did correctly type his name with a 'z' but it posted as a 'd'. And when I tried to edit my post vanished. Trying again.

edit again. Even after correcting the 'd' to a 'z' it posted for the third time as a 'd'.
Dunno what to do. :idunno: And, the link does not come through completely.
Again if the name comes through as 'stolder' just search changing the 'd' to a 'z' and use gunsmithing as the tag. Hope it works.

"Don't sweat the small stuff." ====> I long ago quit worrying about being wrong on things large & small. Instead, I try to NOT make "the same silly mistake" repeatedly.

I'll go give "Stolzer" a try.======> Fwiw, it's doing the same to me!!!= !@#$%^!

While not the "biggest" I've just taken the deposit on a 8 bore .828 perc. rifle. Will see what happens when it's fired--by the guy that wants it !!! Tom

FOUND the site!!!! FINALLY!!!

As for that 2-bore double-rifle, all I can say is, "I wouldn't want that much PAIN in my life."

Also, on a retired soldier's pension, I seriously doubt that I could EVER afford his firearms, so I need NOT worry about that much PAIN.

Just out of idle curiousity, what is the BIGGEST bore in a ML rifle that you've ever seen, fired or built?

"The Colonel Mayes" is PUNISHING when "loaded for BIG-game". = I can (more or less) handle 2 of firings of each barrel "at one sitting".

yours, satx

Fwiw, I'm considering whether I can afford a "really plain-vanilla" left-hand ML Cape-Gun in 16x16 bore with the right barrel rifled AND still go to Africa in Aug-Oct next year.
(I'm trying to get permission, so far W/O success, to take a leopard with a crossbow. = According to all the available records, that hasn't been done before.)

For those readers who are HORRIFIED even at the THOUGHT of a person wanting to collect "the green-eyed, spotted devil" as a trophy, there are MORE leopards living NOW than there was in the 16th century, according to THE WORLD WILDLIFE FUND, which is certainly NOT a "pro-hunting group".
(Last year, a full-grown female leopard was "killed by police" inside an art museum in "Joburg" & another leopard was killed with a shotgun by a homeowner in a downtown "back garden" in Durban.)

Note: More leopards were killed "in collisions with motor vehicles" just last year than in the last 2 decades of lawful hunting.

I hunted in Namibia in 1982 and one place I stayed had a tombstone in the front yard. The young man there stated that was his father's grave. He had killed 21 leopards in his life. The 22nd one killed him.
The son had the cleaned leopard's skull on his coffee table. He said, "That is the leopard that killed my dad. I killed him."

I won't argue with your post. = Leopards & Jaguars look at persons as "slow-moving, easily caught & TASTY protein" and not much more than that.
(The late/great JIM CORBETT, who was a widely-known author & hunter of "man-eaters" in British India, "came close, several times to being invited to dinner" by big cats. - He further said that leopards are ALL potential man-eaters.)

ADDENDA: You hunt in Africa & don't want to take a leopard?

yours, satx

I only hunted there one time and couldn't afford the time or trophy fee for a leopard. I got 13 animals in 2 weeks and it cost less than $4000. The leopard would have added at least a week and more than doubled the cost. The trophy fee was $3500.

Don't tell a soul. = It's a "deep dark secret".

I've found a locale where the leopards are MANY & the "trophy fee" is MUCH lower than your quoted price.
(And I'd "borrow against my house" to take a leopard with a X-bow.)

Oddly enough, a CITES export permit isn't really THAT hard to get for leopard; otoh, you would have to be "a prince of the royal blood" to get a CITES permit for MANED LION and/or a BONGO.
(Until his death about 4 years ago, I knew a multi-millionaire from "boarding school DAZE" who wasn't willing to pay what ANY of the African nations wanted to shoot just ONE of those. = You could buy a "pretty fair-sized castle" for the quoted price for either one.)

Note: We have 7 weeks to hunt, plus "coming & going".

I read of a one bore somewhere along the way. I think it was on this forum but since I use more than one forum, I can't say for sure where I saw it. Anyway, a one bore is the largest that I have ever heard of and I sure as heck wouldn't want to shoot it. I can't remember but something like that must have been a wall gun. I can't imagine firing something that shoots a full one pound ball from my shoulder. My brother-in-law had a half stock caplock rifle that had a huge bore. I don't know what the caliber was but I remember it being BIG. I joked about not needing a cleaning rod, you would just have to hold a rag in your hand and wipe it out. He just kept it in his gun safe for several years. One day I approached him about buying it from him and he told me that he had given it to another guy. He said that it was just taking up space in his gun safe and if he had known that I wanted it, he would have given it to me. Needless to say, I had to take out my handkerchief and dab away a few tears. I sure wish I knew what the caliber was and what it was intended for. It had a rifled bore and I would guess that it was somewhat larger than a .62 caliber. My brother-in-law is dead now and my sister has no idea who he gave it to so I will never know any more about it.

Perhaps you are LUCKY to have NOT received a rifle of that LARGE bore. - I doubt if you particularly want to have surgery to repair the damage from a BIG-bore rifle.
("The Colonel Mayes" is quite enough punishment to suit this 180#, 72", EOF!!!)

Btw, I asked my chum if he wanted to bring "the Colonel" and come with us & he simply said, "NOPE. I cannot think of a single thing that I've ever lost in Africa & therefore don't need to go hunt for it."
(Imagine that comment said in a "South of Battery", read "South Calinky" accent. = I just HAD to LOL.)

Didja bid on the rhino hunt that was on the news several days ago? I don't think they got the million bucks they were hoping for but they sure got the bleeding hearts going. Poor dumb *&^%$ they just never could understand that the rhino was one that had to be culled from the herd for the improvement of the herd. The sponsors could have had one of their folks kill it but they wanted to raffle off a chance for someone to hunt that animal to raise money for the continued improvement of that herd.

Well, good luck on your hunt. Will you be doing any black powder hunting?

I have never seen such a gun other than in pictures and videos.
After shooting the standard size rifles I think that I would decline an opportunity to shoot one.
No thank you. The biggest thing I think I will shoot is a 12G.
:)

As for leopards and jaguars eating people....of course they do. Their natural prey in both cases are monkeys. To a big cat that eats monkeys, people must look like a super size meal.

Shooting a TAME rhino doesn't appeal to me.
(I'd sooner go shoot a Brahma calf in a rancher's pasture, as at least the calf would make GOOD BBQ, chili or cheeseburgers.)

Otoh, I enjoyed "the thumb in the eye" given to "the animal rights KOOKS" by the Dallas charity group.
(Animals no more have "rights" than trees do, as they are INCAPABLE of enjoying the sort of "rights", that "the animal activists" blather on & on, endlessly about. = Even my cat, "Twit", cannot/doesn't take advantage of any of the BoR. - She's more interested in fresh mackerel or a "nice fresh mouse".)

Forgot to answer your other question: YEP. I'm planning on taking at least a pair of ML for taking "plains game" & "camp meat" on Mike's "school chum's large ranch".
("Rob" told "Dr. Mike" that he needs some "culling done".)

Well said. :hatsoff:

The 19th century elephant hunters would purposely kill rhinos to feed their crew of skinners, bearers, etc. They were reputed to taste quite good ... maybe better than a Brahma.
