‘ The Deveopment, Technology and Application Mechanised Manufacture to the Enfield Pattern 1853 and the Achievement of Interchagability‘ is a Doctorate thesis of Peter Smithurst publicly available and can be found at:

One should note that, apart from the London Small Arms Company of similar production, the Enfield arms used in the USA during the ACW were hand fitted non interchangeable commercial productions of many different works including in Belgium and France. The British army worked hard to replace their non interchangeable with the interchangeable Enfield made ones releasing the others into the market for Militia, Volunteers and the commercial market whence many made their way to both sides in the ACW.
It is a very detailed exposition of the sheer investment and detail of the Pattern manufacture and well worth reading.
