I hunt all through season with my flintlock most of the time, I have two percussion TCs that I hunted with after I put them together until I killed a deer with both of them then, put them back in the gun safe.

I like deer meat; I need one for myself and one for my sister-in-law, using a flintlock I can usually kill one deer but not always two. I did have several whackem and stackem friends that were always looking for someone to give their excess deer to that kept me supplied. Old age, cancer and back surgeries have sidelined these friends so I may have to take drastic measures to keep the freezer filled.

I don't travel to hunt anymore and hunt out of my back door, hunting small acreages clues the deer in on your hunting habits in short order making flintlock shots few and far between.

My biggest problem is laziness, the days of me getting up at 4am, driving 50 miles to a management area and being in a tree before daylight are over. In my old age, cold mornings take a toll on me and aren't enjoyable like they once were so I hunt mostly in the evening. I would have much more success if I could bail out of bed and been settled in my stands at daylight.

I usually pass on deer early thinking I will kill one later when it is cooler but the deer become nocturnal later in the season and I usually come up short.

I have only killed one deer with modern stuff in the last 20 years but have toyed with the idea for this year for the freezer's sake.

Can’t wait to walk my New Englander in the nw Wisconsin woods this Nov. It’s a large area with really no pressure. I usually see no one. Last year I got a buck on day 2, which was great but sorta sucked too since I basically just hung out for the next 7 days while the other 2 guys hunted. This year I’m upping my standards on what buck I’ll take if the opportunity arises. I’ve never been a trophy hunter but at this point in my life (in my 60’s now) I don’t much care if I actually get anything, so the hunting part is the best part (I guess it always was). Last years buck broke a “deer drought” where I hadn’t taken one for quite a few years due to work. I’m retired and healthy now so these are the best of times while it lasts. Good luck to all of you this year! I love the pics posted here.

Eric I think I'm getting there too unfortunately.

Before there was a muzzleloader antelope season I hunted regular rifle with a m/l. I was more aggressive then. With bpcr we don't go opening weekend. Too many psychos.

Tomorrow i will check the zero of two TC New Englander rifles in preparation for deer season that opens on 26 October. Round balls.of course.

One rifle is a .50 caliber, the other is a roached .54 caliber that was re-bored by Mr. Hoyt. to .58 caliber with 1/56 rifling and rounded grooves. That .58 is fine hog stomper. Also have a .54 New Englander that has taken couple dozen deer.

Most of my "hunting' is from stands or blinds overlooking wheat fields, game plots, ponds, etc. My shots are limited to < 60-65 yards.

i like to get down and crawl up on a deer or hog. But at 85 it can get painful.

I hunt year round with a ML. Deer season with my Jaeger or English sporting rifle. Duck and dove with a 10 or 20 SxS. Spring turkey, squirrels and other vermin with a .40 flintlock.

I plan to hunt on a military base in this fall's "general season" with traditional muzzleloader either a .45 Kentucky or .50 Lyman Deerstalker both percussion and with round balls. I'll also hunt Arkansas new "Alternative Weapons" season (previously muzzleloader season) with the .45. I might go for a bear with it if I get a deer in the freezer first.

Will be doing it 2 weeks from Saturday, bow hunted in regular rifle season many years with longbows mostly and a little with recurves
