I had asked a few months ago on this forum for recommendations on a good ML building instruction book. The Gunsmith of Grenville County was the book most highly recommended. I searched online for a copy, but all I could find was a hardbound volume at Amazon for $160.00. That exceeded my budget and I had to pass :( .

Today I found out that Scurlock is printing it again new, spiral bound, and it is available at Amazon and TOW for $40.00-45.00 :applause: . I placed my order today and I await with great anticipation (this rivals the time all those years ago when I mailed in all those boxtops) the arrival of this great work.

I just wanted to pass that on for anyone else who might be interested. I want to thank the people on this forum who turned me on to this book. May your flints always spark and your powder stay dry.

If we're all thinking the same thing, then somebody is not thinking. - Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.

i got mine some years ago before it went out of print and i was flabbergasted at what happened to the price ... i have seen them in fleabay with an asking price of over two fifty ... ridiculous, IMO ...

glad they are back in print ...

you're gonna get a ton of information out of this book, but don't feel compelled to get all the tools he mentions - you'll end up with another mortgage!

While smoking summer sausage, I spent several days reading the new edition. I then spent a few days making some of the tools he suggests, which I found made some tasks easier and more precise.

The author goes into much greater detail than other books I have read.

How much summer ya makin that it takes several days to smoke? As I read through the grenville gunsmith book it occurs to me I have a lot to learn. I am very interested in the section on buttplate inletting. I would like more info on fitting a plate to a preshaped stock since that is one of the projects I am currently working on. And more than that on selecting the best suited plate as far as size and shape. I don't own a band saw so most of this type of work is done with hand tools.

MSW, Archie, and tbarnes66, thank you all for your encouragement. I don't think I need to buy much in the way of tools as I inherited quite a few from my late father. It might be fun to try and make a couple of them, just as the old time gunsmiths did. Thanks again guys  !

I got the book RECREATING THE AMERICAN LONGRIFLE and am now building my second kit and i just order last week the book GUNSMITH OF GRENVILLE from TOW and i m hopping for something new to read .have fun

I had 4 25lb batches and each batch takes about 7 hrs to smoke.

For those of you that have read both, I do have a question. If I already have The Gunsmith of Grenville Co, is it worth the $$ to also buy Recreating the American Longrifle?

I haven't yet since Peter Alexander is part of both and didn't know if there was a lot to be gained.

I have them both and am glad I do, but personally, I think I like RAL a lil better. It seems like it has a simpler approach, but both are valuable. You'll get something from each.

I guess I just went plum crazy!! I bought Recreating the American Longrifle, The Gunsmith of Grenville County Revised Edition, and both volumes of Rifles of Colonial American by George Shumway.

Since I found the Gunsmith of Grenville Co a little hard to follow at times, sounds like just what I need. Will order today. Thanks.
