I have a small paring knife that was made by Old Hickory. I'm putting a new handle on. My question is the brass rod that I have to make the pins out of will I be able to sand it down with the wood or how or when do I put the pins in the handle?

You can put them before or after you glue up your handle it will work either way, myself I always put them in when I glue up then the handle dont slide around, and with a good sharp new file work the pins down to the handle and sand smooth.

If you want it to look more correct for the period, use iron/steel pins. Brass pins were seldom to never used. If you want it even more correct, countersink the holes a tad bit and peen the pins down. Not PC, but I like grip slabs epoxied to the tangs. It prevents water intrusion and is not seen. Or should not be seen.

I use Devcon 2 ton. Easy to find, easy to use, works great. I have used it for over 25 years. If you want the ultimate bestest, use Brownell's Acraglas. The original formula.

Thanks to everyone for the help. This is fair week so when it's all over and I get a chance to work on the knife again I will post a picture for you guys. :hatsoff:

J&B is a great epoxy, but too thick for most of what I do. I wish they would bring out a thinner version of it.

So the Devcon 2 ton epoxy is easy to find. Well not in my town not any any where. Will regular epoxy work or is there something special about the Devcon 2 ton.

Ace Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot, Even wal-mart carries it. Im sure the others will work but Devcon is the best in my opinion! :v

Ace Hardware is closing down. Walmart, Orscheln Fram Supply and Sutherland's don't have it either. And Auto Zone not there either you would think that with a town of 8,500 that someone might have it but not yet.

I have checked every auto parts store in this town and nothing. Even went to Joplin and still nothing. I guess I will have to order some and wait for it to come in before I can finish.

Yeah, some are better than others, but go with what you can find, or order the devcon. If you peen rivet the pins, the epoxy is more of just a sealer anyway.

I'm going to try and post a picture of the knife handle that I made if I can get it to work.
