I went to the range today with my father to do some shooting. It takes us an hour to get to the range so I was pretty disappointed that I had left my G-17 under my pillow at home. My dad said what are you going to do? I said you go ahead and shoot I've got another gun. I pulled out my old Lyman 1858 Remy and loaded her up. Best groups I got was with Buffalo Bullets .457 conicals using a pistol wad. They shot high with the same .30 gr charge I used with .454 rd. ball and shot low. I think I'll try a .457 rd. ball. Maybe the weight diffrence will make it hit POA. I probably had a half dosen people watching me shoot that old gun with the smoke, fire ,and boom. I had several people watching me load the gun and tried to give them as much info as I could about cap n ball shooting. Most of which I learned on the board. Maybe there will be others shooting old school like I did today at my local range. Thanks for the help. I did develop one problem, The latch that is dove tailed into the bottom of the barrel that holds the loading lever up is wanting to fall off all of a sudden. Is there any way to tighten it up? It slides out to either side.

I think you can use a small punch to stake it in place.

I think you will find that conical bullets almost always shoot higher than roundballs.

I just looked at my Remingtons dovetail and had a few thoughts.
First off, if you decide to peen the area to tighten the latch it will show badly.
If it were mine, and it were loose enough to remove, I would use some 5 minute Epoxy.
If the joint were fully degreased, and a small amount of Epoxy was applied to the dovetail in the barrel, it would keep the part from moving. The steel of the dovetail joint will still take the load and the fix should be perminate.
Be sure and wipe off all of the Epoxy from all of the exposed surfaces before it hardens.

If you peen the latch itself, center punch it in the middle edge where it goes into the dove tail it would not show.

Small part to hold though. I could see me shooting it across the room when I hit it.
Lehigh...

I degreased the area and filled it with Loktite. Seems pretty solid for now. Guess will se what happens when I shoot the bad boy.
