Just checked the 1847 Infantry Manual - and its the same as the later ones; load from cartridge followed by 'prime' (in this case with a cap) - "... half **** the piece (move the forefinger to throw-off the old cap), than take a cap from the pocket...". It's a well disciplined set of commands and motions; there's no explantion that I have seen suggesting mitigation of flash fires.

Thanks for that. If you ever remove barrel from stock and can confirm the tiny proof date code, two letters and a number either between crossed swords or within a circle, I can confirm the year the barrel was proofed. All helps with understanding the production time line.

Thanks for the pictures. Quite difficult to make out the codes with the chalk / powder fill, but possibly:

093336 - MC3 (?) - 1986
094216 - BC4 - 1977
095257 - I can't read this.
